The King of Teatime Quizzes

By | January 20, 2012

For whatever reason I felt the urge to watch an episode of Dick ‘n’ Dom’s Ask the Family last night. And happily the final episode is up on Youtube:

Although unfortunately by this point in the run most of the madness had been toned down after it had been so poorly received. Pity.

In other news, and this might be interesting, Griff Rhys-Jones is fronting a comedy panel game called A Short History of Almost Everything which will be going out LIVE on Mondays from February 20th on Channel 4. Viewers will be able to play along and dictate the scores, apparently. Tickets here, although I don’t know how much you’ll be missing if you just watch it on telly. Will it be on a delay to cut out the fun libellous stuff?

I guess this also gives a hint as to when The Bank Job is happening, as it’s 9pm entry presumably for 10pm start. So TBJ won’t be on Monday nights at 10 from the middle of February.

They updated the online game slightly- they put in more of the sound effects and music from the show. Not bad actually.

Yea, I got a list from Channel 5 of some. But its pretty hard to find them. A guy called Luis Jardim did 2. One called Tension run and anouther called Game Go

From finding out that Numberwang is in there, #1 is its spiritual daddy, Quizzlestick.

I do like the way that the tracks from the start of the CD are heavily represented in real life, suggesting that the people whose job it is to dig some library music out could not be bothered to listen particularly far through the CD, and it may turn out that we have listened to more of the tracks than the real life, er, selectors.

By extension, it seems plausible that there is an ’80s library music CD somewhere out there with all the music from Catchphrase on it. That would be worth a small jackpot…

Track 5 is the theme tune from Jeopardy! The Sky One version with Paul Ross.

You know I’m amazed how production companies can sometimes find the right music using library music search engines.

They are mostly retched things, and even though you’ve managed to find a piece of music composed by one person by accident whilst grazing the site, try and find other bits of works by the same composer, via the site search engine – and it usually denies all knowledge of said tunesmith.

How on earth did you find Lock Down or Paul Farrer, Big B?
I’ve tried all combinations, variations and all points in between and the white flag is now fluttering over my internet connection at this moment…

(although, click on catergories > Film and TV > Blockbusters, and the original and the dreadful Sky One remake of ‘Quiz Wizard’ are on there..)

If you search for Farrer under composer search (in advanced) the suite is there. Also make sure you’re on the All tab in the main bit.

It’s JM 29 – Entertainment if that’s any use to you.

In fairness, what I quite like about APM is that the stuff it suggests for gameshows does at least sound like the sort of thing they’ve been using for the past ten years, unlike elsewhere.

Great stuff there. Call it a game-showy mash-up if you like, but I’ve been playing The Bank Job’s online game while having ‘Overcoming Obstacles’ playing (the music used in the assault course round of TKF).

On my last game, I took £92k out of the vault and my overall total has now broken the £2m barrier. I still need to get my win ratio up though, it’s at 42/60 right now. I sort of set myself a challenge to add at least £500k to my overall total each day and it seems to be paying off!

          Got it – thanks, Brig.
Interesting the The Krypton Factor themes and partworks have now fallen into the world of library music. Means that ITV are not trying to flog the format on the international sales market, and if they were, the theme would have been a cog in the ‘kit of parts’ in buying the local version of the show.

And I am right – listen to Lock Down, then listen to the theme to The Magicians – a few more harps and violins chucked around – but essentially the same tune – just with a bit more fake stone cladding.

And, surprised you’ve not mentioned who is providing the music from track 141 onwards…

..shame it’s not the music from ‘that show’ though.

Ooh, hang on, I didn’t think to check.

I think everyone Bar related on Twitter pointed out the KF thing on The Magicians within about twenty seconds of it starting last year.

            IT JUST GETS BETTER..

            JM38 – Face The Facts

(or the theme to The Chase – as it’s known in the real world)

          3. Andy "Kesh" Sullivan

Awesome find! If the main theme is there, I’d LOVE it if there was a clean version of The Final Chase’s music there too!

About 3/4 of the way down are 3 tension beds and 2 stings.

          4. El Condor

Isn’t the Magicians theme a KFac version of “Danse Macabre” i.e. Jonathan Creek’s theme?

Thought it was a magic reference

          5. Brig Bother Post author

Cheers for this, I never watched Jonathan Creek so it would have never occured to me that The Magicians is based on a traditional piece. Mixed with Lock Down.

Either I am being dim but when I do a search for Farrer it’s saying there is nothing.

There’s only some Zack Lawrence on My APM as well. Turns out that Peak Performance is only track 5 on BR 8 (“Grandiose, Impressive, Panoramic”).

Completely wild-arsed guess: The Crystal Maze might not have been too far from having track 6 (“Thrilling Prospect”) by the same man on the same CD as its theme. It would certainly score well on the old-fashioned “You can sing the name of the show to the theme tune” factor: there’s an obvious “It’s! The! Crys! Tal! Maze!” at the start, with a repeated “it’s-the bloo-dy Cry-stal Maze” line appearing many times later on.

Not sure how many people here have heard this, but check out track 3, “Millions of Me” (hit the music note button next to it) here:

      http://www2.playvideohelper.com/pages/viewcd/viewcd.cfm?cdnum=4699

It’s the music for the $1,000,000 level from the US version of Minute to Win It, and quite possibly the only thing the US version consistently did right.

Incidentally, I also found out that the same music is used quite a few times by Kamen Rider Decade in Japan. See it here starting at about 12:00 and again at about 19:30:

Track 6 was bugging me for a while as well, but I’m pretty sure it was one of the pieces of music used on Catchphrase.

I’ve done a little snooping of my own (by which I mean I googled for more production music libraries! :D) and I found this:

If you listen to the track named ‘Quizzer’ by Terry Devine-King, you might just recognise it as the tune that played on the SCS Sofa break bumpers for The Cube (“Far from square. SCS Sofas sponsor The Cube”) and the tune they used to advertise the Classic Celebrity Millionaire shows on Challenge. I also recognise it from my James May’s Amazing Brain Trainer DVD game.

And one more to be going on with for now:

Same composer, track named ‘Casino Challenge’ is the track used on the break bumpers for The Exit List. I know, I wish it WAS the awesome music used on the actual show…

Kesh, you’re a sleuth. That is quite an extraordinary find.

I’ll say this: listening to his other beds, this Terry Devine-King could give tired old Marc “one chord” Sylvan a run for his money any day.

I tend to stay away from the shopping channels personally, so I didn’t know that. I just knew it from The Exit List.
