Rings

By | August 3, 2016

It’s The Olympics this week which will pretty much take up most of television over the next fortnight (the football starts tonight even though the opening ceremony isn’t until Friday) and I thought “wouldn’t it be great if I could illustrate this, right, with a clip of Rio from Gladiators playing Hang Tough hence rings like an allusion to the Olympic Rings?”

Unfortunately I couldn’t find a clip so here’s a video Keith Strachan uploaded from Talking Telephone Numbers (telephone rings, you see) with Emma Forbes and… Danny Baker?

From the pilot, presumably?

A bit of a full circle thing: CBS is planning an extra season of Big Brother US this year (in fact in the fall- soon after the current season ends); the difference is it will be exclusively online via their CBS All Access service (which has hosted the live feeds for the past couple of years). A Summer 2017 run for the normal show is still planned; this special season will be geared toward the online-only watchers and will be shorter than normal (about 70 days compared to the current season’s 99)

Mmm, yes, I had read about this. It’ll be interesting to see what sort of budget it has compared to a usual season.

This doesn’t have anything to do with that Tim Vine-hosted quiz piloted last year, does it? Seem to recall that having a trick answer element to it.

Unlikely the contestants are going to win anything near the £15,000 top prize, if it’s a daytime BBC One show…

Crimewatch is coming back in September and to make up for the fact it hasn’t been seen in primetime for about a million years the BBC are ramping it up to a weekly production LIVE from the location of the main crime scene for each show…

…Oh yeah, and in a slightly bizarre twist Jeremy Vine from Eggheads is going to be presenting, aided by Tina Daheley, because he once managed to convict a dangerous driver with his cycling helmet CCTV don’t you know

Is this a some new reality game show format, pitting real life criminals against the general public?

Sounds right up this pages street.

The Olympic air rifle shooting final would come closer than most sports to making a decent format – and far more interesting than any penalty shootout, Mr. 12 Yard.

Eight qualify for the final and simultaneously take eight shots (the first six in two volleys of three, the seventh and eighth separately) at a target, scoring up to a possible 10.9 per shot. (In practice, you need to average 10.4 or so to be competitive.) The lowest scorer after eight shots is eliminated. The remaining seven take two more shots, and the lowest scorer (over all 10 shots) is elimianted. The remaining six carry on in the same way eliminating the 6th-place finisher after 12 shots, the 5th-place finisher after 14, the 4th-place finisher after 16 and the bronze medallist after 18 shots, with the gold medal going to the highest scorer over 20 shots.

OBS do a good job with the TV direction once the elimination stages start, focusing on the currently-in-danger-of-elimination shooter and the shooter they are trying to catch – though, of course, any of the front runners can shoot a stray 9.3 to drop them into danger.

That’s sort of how the original Eternal Glory worked on the continent.

The issue is finding a game that’s consistantly close but allowing enough swing throughout all the elimination bits, although I certainly think there’s something in it as a format idea.

Rio never played Hang Tough. (I KNOW!) But if memory serves the circular bit of carpet in Whiplash was called a ‘ring’, and she did that basically every time they played it while she was there.

I double checked my records (read: saved write-ups from a now-defunct Gladiators forum), and Amazon never played it either.
