Bother’s Bar BATTLE MODE – 1/1/15

By | December 29, 2014

bbbattlemodeOK, the Mario Kart tournament went down *quite* well (eventually) so to try and iron it out a bit more, I’m proposing another grand tournament on New Year’s Day, in a new irregular community strand called Bother’s Bar BATTLE MODE. As you can see, we’ve put full effort into the logo. Moody. This will possibly happen about once/twice a month.

So if you want to come and play with us I’m hosting another game of Mario Kart 8 on New Year’s Day:

Game: Mario Kart 8 on Wii U (DLC will not be required for this one, but will for future tournaments)

Date: 1/1/2015, 8:30-9:30pm GMT (3:30pm EST)

Code: 8187-4168-2319

Go to Online -> Tournaments -> Search by code. Join in and drop out as you like across the hour.

We learnt some things from the tournament last night and we’ve changed a few settings – hopefully everyone should be in the same room, and if you find you’re out on your own people should join you in a few minutes or try leaving the room and coming back. If there are fewer than twelve playing, you’ll probably be waiting until everyone else has finished a race if you get there late – we’re still experimenting a bit.

It’s not like you’ve got much better to do on New Year’s Day so why not come and join us! We will probably be playing games of Smash Bros, Fibbage, Drawful over the coming months – BBBM will likely happen irregularly on weekend evenings in the future.

ALSO ON NEW YEAR’S DAY – The Poll of 2014 will open, and Wie is De Mol? begins in the Netherlands. Our page on The Genius S3 has now been archived in the Specials section.

To all my readers: happy new year!

Show Discussion: Win Your Wish List

By | December 27, 2014

wishlistSaturdays, 7:40pm (ep 1)
BBC1

Shane Richie gives couples the chance to win their dream prizes in this new National Lottery game show. How similar or otherwise it will be to Gift Wrapped I don’t know. Shows based around non-cash prizes seem to be quite a hard sell to viewers these days. We like Richie as a host though.

Are production companies obligated to gave lottery gameshows lottery branding, despite having no real ties to the lottery? It strikes me that printing it up on the screen like that makes it a bit harder to edit out to sell to Challenge TV in the future.

Bother’s Bar Festive Limbo Mario Kart 8 Tournament this Sunday! (That’s the 28th)

By | December 26, 2014

Alright, allow us this indulgence, it’s not like there’s anything worthwhile happening anyway (and a show discussion post for Win Your Wish List will appear tomorrow), but if you got a Wii U for Christmas (or even if you already have one) you probably don’t have anything better to do this weekend – heck, you probably don’t even know what day it is! So why not join us in the Bother’s Bar Festive Mario Kart 8 Challenge Tournament on Sunday evening? It’s open worldwide, opens 8pm UK time and finishes approximately 9:30pm.

Name: Bother’s Bar
Entry code: 5165-4287-1342
Date and time: 28th December, 8-9:30pm GMT (that’s 3pm EST, for those in the the US)

You can join in any time (although you’ll probably want to be there from the start to have the best chance). I actually don’t have any idea what’s going to happen (I have “easy CPU” to make up numbers if nobody turns up) so there are no prizes except fame and adulation, but if enough people turn up to make it worthwhile then we’ll consider doing it again in the future. Feel free to add me as a friend on Nintendo Network or PSN: BrigBother in both cases. This isn’t mandatory to join the tournament. See you then!

You will find it Online (one or two player if you have a bored friend) -> Tournaments. Search by code.

Merry Quizmas!!!!!!!

By | December 24, 2014

Ho ho ho dear, it appears to be Christmas!

Right, there was a lot of extra-curricular quizzing activity on our live Raab-cast on Saturday, including Mastermind, 21 Questions Wrong Hotseat and a full episode’s worth of Only Connect questions. I thought, for an experiment, it might be fun to collate those all together in one place. It’s been very hurrily edited (I’m no TV’s Michelle Martin) but the results of the quick cut and paste job can be found right here:

Maybe one day I’ll get round to doing “Who’s Shoes?” as a separate video.

In the meantime, if you would like to play the traditional Bother’s Bar festive game of 21 Questions Wrong HOTSEAT around your dinner table using the questions used in that video, you can print them off from here if you want.

Finally, GSN’s The Line debuted last night and lots of people have been trying to find our discussion of the UK Walk the Line pilot we were sent a few years ago. The video no longer works, but the direct link to our discussion is here. If you watched it in the US, let us know what you thought.

Making a Mount Midoriyama out of a molehill

By | December 22, 2014

Exciting news this afternoon, Michael Kelpie from Potato (the ITV studio who make The Chase) announced on Twitter that they will be making a proper local version of Ninja Warrior. Potentially this is quite exciting, the Japanese one built up a cult following on Challenge over the years (although it had to be redubbed after the Stuart Hall allegations) and it’s been a number of years since we had an obstacle course show in the form of Total Wipeout. I just hope it’s a bit more impressive than American Ninja Warrior which I caught once and appeared to be mainly people running up and down a beach. Edit: If you want apply you can through this link.

You’re Back In The Room, a hypnotism game show with Phillip Schofield where people have to do physical and mental challenges despite having been comically hypnotised by Keith Barry beforehand films at ITV Towers 19th-21st January, tickets at Lost in TV.

Meanwhile if you want to join Emma Willis in an air-hanger in Farnborough in Saturdays in February for Prized Apart, you can do that through SRO. Still not sure on the logistics of that, the suggestion was it was going to be live, but Willis will also be hosting The Voice going out on Saturday nights. So who knows?

In other news, there was so much good quizzy extraneous stuff in the Schlag den Raab commentary broadcast on Saturday that as an experiment I’m looking into editing it down to just that (so you can see what you’re missing) and uploading it for Christmas. Fingers crossed tomorrow night or Xmas Eve morning.
