Show Discussion: Rupaul’s Drag Race UK

By | October 2, 2019

Thursdays, 8pm,
BBC3 (on iPlayer)

It’s been a long time coming but US cultural phenomenon Rupaul’s Drag Race begins in earnest on BBC3.

Michelle Visage, Graham Norton, Alan Carr and a bevy of guest judges will help determine which of the drag queens has the charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent to rule them all, and it will be quite interesting to see the differences between UK and US drag. Also: will they still “do” Snatch Game even though that title won’t really work on a UK-centric show?

Plenty of questions, and the distribution method certainly raises an eyebrow, although given the show’s UK presence has mainly been built up through Netflix and on-demand, may be quite smart. We’ll see.

If you’re looking for a drag-queen related game show thing to post, remember that Weakest Link did a couple of Drag Queen specials and they’re quite honestly up there with some of the funniest TV I’ve ever seen. A few other versions of Weakest Link (to my knowledge France, Spain and the Netherlands) also did this, and the French even did a special where all the contestants were guys dressed up like the host Laurence Boccolini. The full UK episode isn’t on YouTube,so here’s the Spanish attempt https://youtu.be/kz8o5HslVSI

Halfway through the series, I’m really enjoying it! It’s nice knowing who the celebrity guests are, and understanding all the references. Can tell that this won’t be the last Drag Race UK.

They have confirmed that Snatch Game will happen, but have acknowledes that the UK title was Blankety Blank, so probably they will play with the UK title. But I can’t make anything camp up with Blanke Blank right now…

Thought the opening episode was fantastic, really felt like it stuck to the beats people expect from Drag Race but the whole thing felt slightly less cutthroat, which is for the best. Sum Ting Wong’s second look was phenomenal.

      Yes, that was my favourite.

I’ve only seen a handful of episodes of RDR US and have enjoyed what I saw (it’s been on my list forever). I would suggest that I felt the 60 minute run time rather, although it got a lot better once the catwalk started.

I wonder if Lily Savage will put in a special Snatch Game appearance?
