Is anyone going to see the High Stakes pilot next week?

By | March 3, 2011

It’s filming up in Manchester on Thursday.

I’m blessed with a job with a very generous leave allowance which I can take at the drop of a hat however I’d rather not use it all up by the end of March. Similarly a train ticket to London is no problem, train tickets + hotels start to add up.

So if you don’t want me at your pilot, go and film it in Manchester. However, is anyone planning on going and would they like to report on it? I notice they’ve got rid of all traces of top one-time gambling-addict and underclass baiter Jeremy Kyle, and that originally it was going to be an ITV/NBC co-production but the NBC bit has been delisted. They’ve also made it sound exactly like Secret Fortune, although I suspect it will be actually different. I’ve already decided that it looks like it’s trying a bit too hard.

    Hi,

I have 5 tickets to go and see this. I actually had an audition for it last week so I am hoping to actually be a part of it rather than in the audience (been told I will find out today….).

I auditioned with 2 friends and got the tickets presuming at least 1 out of us 3 would get on. I would be happy to let you know what happens.

The audition was basically a brief run through of the show which involves a lot of luck mixed with GK. Apparantly there are going to be 8 or 9 rows of 7 doors each with an ascending number of trap doors. You can take a “hint” and be asked a question which, if correct, will reveal where one of the trap doors are. The aim is to get past each row without hitting a trap door.

    Confused yet??

So basically it’s a quiz version of Knock Knock from Takeshi’s Castle.

Somewhere out there is a clip of Alex Trebek hosting a Pitfall bonus round, possibly under the affluence of incohol. He certainly does a bizarre dance at one point which might be considered most unbecoming the host of a long-running quiz show.

I have a lot of time for Alex Trebek. If he was a jerk in person, we’d have heard by now (and I don’t think we have done), and his voice is very soothing.

I think that was this bonus round (although I won’t rule out that Alex did more than one embarrassing dance on Pitfall. I’m sure he did something similar when he didn’t get paid for the gig)

The usual Alex Trebek drunk urban legend surrounded his last taping on the very first incarnation of High Rollers, but given some of his other appearances on shows during the 70s, I wouldn’t put it past him to have been sauce-powered on more than one occasion. For example, there was a game show host tournament for charity on (Play Your) Card Sharks (Right) than ran for something like two weeks that he took place in, and his behavior (and dress – I think he wore a Montreal Canadiens hockey jersey throughout while the other hosts were decked out in their usual hosting finery) could most charitably be described as “off”.

It should be noted that Alex Trebek, publicly when asked about Pitfall that he is not very happy to talk about it. He allowed the production company to defer his payment for tax purposes and they stiffed him financially (he got nothing). It makes him even more mad that it was his “countrymen” (Canadians).

The description I’d heard was “Million Pound Drop with people instead of money” which from Debbie’s post sounds at least a little bit accurate. The person describing it to me went on to make it sound quite a lot like 101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow (sic), but I’d had a drink, so might have misinterpreted.

Was about to get all excited about a Comic Relief Only Connect special on Monday 14th but it seems it’s just a rebranded repeated of the Children in Need one from last year.

It is a new, New, NEW! episode (it would’ve been rather difficult to rebrand it!?) although 5 out of the 6 contestants are the same as the CiN one. Brian Sewell is in for Rev Richard Coles.

There will be celeb specials next year too.

Thanks. Virtually the same teams was the thing that confused me.

This sounds quite good, actually. Nowadays you can’t do a straight singing talent show because people will dismiss it and call it an X Factor rip-off. New singing shows have to have a twist, like The Voice of… which have the revolving chairs and this show has the distractions. If it’s made in the right manner (deliberately make it funny, no sob stories, not too much emphasis on celebs but emphasise on the funnny distractions), it’ll be a hit.

I predict this will be about as much of a success as Who Dares Sings, but I’m trying to get a ticket so will hold off judgement until then.

Early prediction, it will appear in the UKgameshows.com Hall of Shame 2011. I have seen the promo video on Youtube and if they use celebrities (which they will) then the show will be blasted by the viewers.

Scrolling through the comments, they mention this (third comment from the end, if you view all comments): “I remember this show it was called Bobby Davro Public Enemy One shown on BBC one in 1992.”

Yes, this is the rushes from the last studio taping of ‘Bobby Davro – Public Enemy Number One’ (hence why he is in the stocks – it’s all the celebs ‘he’ set up and played jokes on throughout the series.
(another incidental sideline, it was also the first show to give Saturday evening peaktime exposure to Dale Winton).

The footage has been seen before – but only if you have a job working in the studios – it features on a BBC internal Health & Safety video. The point being make sure any freestanding prop is secured at ground level – which those stocks very obviously wern’t. Result. Broken nose for Davro.

Don’t forget starting from midday is 24 Hour Panel People. Live streaming via the Red Nose Day website. It seems they are bending the rules with “panel shows” and going to include The Generation Game.
