Ho ho ho! Episode 03 of Bother’s Bar’s monthlyish pub quiz The Line Up, the Non Celebrity Special de facto Christmas Special is now available to listen to! This month as well as 30 questions from our friends at QuizQuizQuiz there is a NEW BED and a NEW SOUND EFFECT.
Saturday 7:15pm UK time Pro Sieben or dodgy internet streaming
Get your Wodka Gorbechow ready, this episode, Bother’s Bar ONCE AGAIN brings you Only Connect‘s David J Bodycombe, Daniel Peake and Lewis Murphy from Fifty 50 and myself guiding you through the evening’s Schlag den Raab – LIVE! Come back here at 7ish for a link to our live stream. We’re hoping to go on through until the close of play which could be any time between 11pm (if it’s a whitewash) and 2am (if it goes to the wire). Even if you can’t join us for the entirety of it, just tune in when you want!
And we want you to get involved! Your best way is either opening up the stream in a new window and making YouTube comments or tweeting with the hashtag #bbsdr. We’ll read out the most worthwhile ones. And some of the not-so-worthwhile ones. And we’ll be doing it LIVE.
Whatsmore this episode we are doing a competition! You need to predict who will win and what time the confetti will go off according to my watch. If you’re correct with the winner and closest to the time you’ll win €35. If you’re closest and within five minutes, you’ll win €100! Congratulations to Caroline whose guess of the Contestant winning at 23:45 wins €35!
The next episode is January 12th. The jackpot is €500,000
For reference, here are the two commentary streams used throughout the night. In case you’d like a listen. Thanks very much to everyone who did listen in, we were about 50% up on last time:
Stefan Raab has won the last six episodes, so tonight there’s an eye watering €3.5m on the line for one lucky contestant which if it gets won will be, we believe, the biggest post-tax haul taken away from a gameshow worldwide. The musical guests tonight are Taylor Swift, Seeed and Deichkind. I know! Deichkind!
If you’re new to Schlag den Raab then welcome! I’ve included a basic FAQ under the cut.
Newsreader Kenneth Kendall has passed away at the age of 88. Most of us will know him as the genial host of groundbreaking Channel 4 action adventure game Treasure Hunt. Here’s an except from the very first episode:
With Jacques Antoine going this year as well, a bad year for the action adventure genre. This being said, everyone we were watching on television thirty years ago will now be of the sort of age where this sort of thing is increasingly likely to happen.
We’re recording a new episode of The Line Up tomorrow. It will go out hopefully at the slightly earlier time of Sunday morning/afternoon.
This Saturday it’s the RECORD BREAKING Schlag den Raab (unless it’s not won) with €3.5m on the line. Yes we are doing another SCINTILLATING live commentary, watch this space.
Take It All: basically it’s just a parade of unusual items over a forty-five minute period. But hey! That’s basically the entire appeal of Celebrity Big Brother launch night so you know. Game works OK, there’s not much to it other than “avoid having the lowest valued prize”, but the mechanics are basically sound although I was a bit bored by round three. Prisoner’s Dilemma end game still lazy, and actually surprisingly not all that tense but I suppose it’s new to mainstream America, so.
There are some gameshow apps out, we will review them all when we’ve got a minute. Top of the shop is The Chase released today (iThing) a pretty damn good portrayal of the show, not quite perfect but certainly recommended. There’s also Mastermind (which basically asked me, paraphrasing, “in which year did the 2011 Japanese Earthquake occur?”), A Question of Sport and Telly Addicts, each of which isn’t really loveable but basically serviceable if you like that sort of thing. There is a new version of the official Countdown app.
I think it had to happen eventually, but it sounds like Pointless is getting a new endgame. I asked Richard Osman if it was being quizzed up, he suggested he “couldn’t possibly comment.”
This basically means one of three things:
1) Yes it’s being quizzed up.
2) It’s the end game from Beat the Nation (which is what Pointless basically is anyway) but with the twist that someone who is good at quizzes will try and get the questions right faster, in a wholly original idea.
3) Being Endemol and “exciting” it’s The Prisoner’s Dilemma.
I’m much better at quizzy Pointless I have to say. Still speaking of 3), Take It All begins on NBC in the US this evening. Not holding out much hope.
It’s Monday and that means there’s a new episode of Fifty 50 out! This week David Howell chats to Lewis Murphy about daytime developments and all sorts of things.
Also it features the best and yet worst game of 21 Questions Wrong yet. The next one is a Christmas special with some Christmassy questions, so well worth getting on the list.
