Controversial

I think it had to happen eventually, but it sounds like Pointless is getting a new endgame. I asked Richard Osman if it was being quizzed up, he suggested he “couldn’t possibly comment.”

This basically means one of three things:

  • 1) Yes it’s being quizzed up.
  • 2) It’s the end game from Beat the Nation (which is what Pointless basically is anyway) but with the twist that someone who is good at quizzes will try and get the questions right faster, in a wholly original idea.
  • 3) Being Endemol and “exciting” it’s The Prisoner’s Dilemma.

I’m much better at quizzy Pointless I have to say. Still speaking of 3), Take It All begins on NBC in the US this evening. Not holding out much hope.

Schlag den Raab is this Saturday. I’ve got a friend joining me to watch it, so I’d like to try and stream it to my TV rather than my tiny computer monitor. I think I noticed someone saying last time that they were able to stream the show through their PS3. Was that just through the console’s browser, or was there some other trick to that?

I’ve found it tends to work provided you have the patience to refresh a few times before it decides to work. Also worth turning off the screen saver option so you don’t have to keep pressing something to bring the display back on.

Yeah – let’s have a split or steal against your team mate, because you can never have too much nasty menace and awkward tension at the end of a friendly knockabout quiz…

Not sure where you could go to re-format the end game with Pointless. It’s not the most exciting end game in the world, but 3 answers in 60 seconds one of which has be 0 to win the loot is quite simple to understand and sort of works.

An idea I had to change it is to choose one from 3-5 vauge categories/subjects, and 15 answers are displayed on the screen, only 3 are pointless, contestants choose 5 answers in 30 seconds – and in turn the answers are gone through and if the 3 pointless answers are found they win the jackpot.

That would even it out a bit, as it stops three dangerously high scoring obvious answers coming back, as the contestants don’t know the answers and flatlining the tension of the final round.

I laughed at that 2nd round picture OC question- how VC kept a straight face I’ll never know..

Take It All: 50-some minutes of not-bad to good, followed by an avoidable tacked on pointless ending.

Take It All: Kinda like The Million Pound Drop – the game is perfectly fine up until the final round, which is total rubbish and can easily render the entire game moot. Except most contestants on Take It All are insufferably shrill and sound like they’re trying to pass a kidney stone the size of Richard Hammond’s garage while being chased by a rabid badger. If you’re going to watch it, I recommend you watch it on mute. It actually made me miss vuvuzelas.

No need at all to mess with the end game in Pointless – it’s simple, it works, and on many shows it’s the only round where a pointless answer is possible.

But it’s getting harder to find suitable topics, surely? What was once “Alfred Hitchcock films” or “Harrison Ford films” is more likely “Seth Rogen films” these days. The more they continue, the naturally more difficult (or at least, convoluted) the questions will get.

And of course there has to be at least 2 or 3 pointless answers in any given final question for it to be actually winnable. The survey answerers are getting smarter: Central African Republic generally scores 1 or 2 now, and I imagine Kyrgyzstan and Seychelles will start doing similarly too.

I suspect there’s gonna be a lawsuit about this one…

The other game they greenlighted (which was only mentioned in passing) sounds like it could be fun in theory though. It’s called Perfect Score, and it’s a dating show. Two friends pick from 12 potential dates, but there’s a catch- everyone did compatibility tests before the show, and based on the results the 12 potential dates will be given secret cash values; the better the match, the higher the value. The person who picks the highest value in the end gets the money and the date.

Worth noting that The CW passed on a Hunger Games-style scripted show (actually an adaptation of another book in the same genre, The Situation), allegedly because the pilot was genuinely terrible.

Not surprised they’re looking at game shows – “Oh Sit!”, mockable name though it was, gained higher ratings than some of the network’s scripted shows have managed since.

I told Brig about it on Twitter earlier today. I won £10 iTunes credit off Pringles this morning so I went and bought The Chase app and 2 MPD question packs. I’ve had a few plays of The Chase and I LOVE it! Everything to do with the show is there, the graphics, the music and the Chasers. The game DOES take some liberties, like giving you 4 options in the Cashbuilder and Final Chase rounds, but it’s a very faithful recreation. I definitely recommend this one.

Quick review after one play: it’s a really good app. But the lack of final chase bed is a large omission, in effect the final chase is two minutes where the app plays itself, and it could do with the heightened tension the bed brings.

        Proper review in due course.

If you mean the Final Chase music that plays on the show, the iPod Touch version that I played has it. I’m guessing you played it on your iPad?

I’ve emailed the makers of the app to see if it can be looked into for you.

I tried a hard reset of my iPad and it seemed to do the trick, so on the off chance that’s happening to anyone else, try that.
