Show Discussion: Ant and Dec’s Limitless Win

By | January 7, 2022

Saturdays, 8:30pm,
ITV

Well there’s nothing like making a rod for your own back is there?

Ant and Dec offer to potentially bankrupt ITV (spoiler: they haven’t bankrupted ITV) in the world’s first limitless jackpot, provided you don’t count any existing winner-stays-on shows, and does so in a method that if the adverts are anything to go by looks ‘a bit maths’. To bank money, players must get answers to numerical questions bang on. They can walk away at any time, but if they ever give an answer that’s over the correct one you leave with nothing. Also if you underguess by too much. How they climb the infinite money ladder is still unexplained, although it certainly looks like you’re climbing for every number you’re off, which would certainly be A Thing.

Something I think will go against it is that it won’t take long for people to work out the difference between what’s ACTUALLY being risked and what’s perceived as the risk – you’re risking £10,000, you haven’t yet won the £1m the ladder is currently at. Also this quote from Dec in the Radio Times worries me a bit:

“We have had some big wins on this series, but I think when people see the show they’ll go, ‘I could do that for longer and be braver and go higher.’ So I’m actually really looking forward to recording another series once people have seen it and got into it and decided what their strategies will be,” Dec said.

Ant and Dec tease “unbearable” Limitless Win moment – Radio Times

Does rather suggest this first series isn’t going to be throwing around the big money they’ve been promising.

ITV have gone big on the promotion of this, and it’s on between The Masked Singer and The John Bishop Show so I probably wouldn’t read too much into the ratings in the first week – if it hasn’t done well there’s something very wrong in the State of Denmark. After that we’ll see. It might be absolutely brilliant. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Mind Your Own Business

The Poll of The Year Truck was in Swindon today, the rest of the week it’s going to Nottingham, Carlisle, Edinburgh and Inverness on Sunday before having to make its way back to Truro on Monday which seems like poor planning. If you see it out in the wild, do post a photo to insta (Instagram). Like a DFS Sale, polling MUST END SUNDAY so remember to get your votes in.

In other news forget Quizzy Mondays, it’s all about BUSINESS THURSDAYS on BBC1 with new Dragon’s’ Den and new The Apprentice starting tomorrow. There’s a new Dragon in town whose USP seems to be “he’s under thirty”, and original Apprentice winner Tim Campbell is temporarily taking over from Claude Littner as one of Sir Alan’s advisors as he went ill before filming. I gather they filmed this series and the next one back to back I think, so he’s probably going to be on that one as well, although I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

AS WELL AS Schlag den Star on Saturday, this Saturday is also the start of the much-hyped Ant and Dec’s Limitless Win. A Show Discussion post will go up on Friday afternoon. However to get you in the mood, before the series filmed in October we offered you the chance to win £7.99 – the price of 2Unlimited’s No Limits album. The winner will be the person closest to the mean win, with a guess to the highest rung in-play as the tie-breaker. Here’s a reminder of what you suggested:

MEAN WIN:

RANGE: £8,560 – £487,500
Mean Avg Guess: £104,695.53
Median Guess: £69,500

HIGHEST RUNG:

RANGE: £45,000 – £8,500,000
Mean Avg Guess: £1,620,459.20
Median Guess: £1,125,000

Well now all your entries can be revealed, as well as your thinking. Who’s been clever and who was quite far from the truth? We’ll know in five episode’s time.

The Poll of The Year Truck has reached Bournemouth today, look out for it in Worthing tomorrow before it starts making its way northwards towards Swindon on Wednesday. Like a DFS Sale, polling MUST END SUNDAY so remember to get your votes in.

I’d also like to draw your attention to a new episode of Schlag den Star on Saturday night, we’ll be watching along on the Discord from 7:15pm UK as usual.

Anyway, Friend Of The Bar @NALGames posted some fun gameshow-based bingo cards on Twitter, and I think it would be remiss of me not to give them a wider audience:

The Poll of the Year 2021 is now OFFICIALLY open!

By | January 2, 2022

Can you hear that? Yes! It’s the UKGameshows/Bother’s Bar Poll of the Year truck touring the nation with a choir of people singing “holidays have finished! Holidays have finished!” for the 17th time! And that means it’s time for you to VOTE VOTE VOTE.

You’ve got a week to do it, all the deets (details) can be found on the Poll Page.

Whilst we’re here, a quick reminder that Wie is De Mol 2022 started last night in The Netherlands, we’re still awaiting English subs at time of writing but I’m sure they’ll appear soon. We don’t have a dedicated WIDM page this year, you lot decided you’d rather discuss it on the Discord, so #molchat is the place to go.

Oh yes, and Happy New Year everyone.

Can’t Fight the Moonlight

Hello Gang, I hope you’re having a fantastic festive season and have stuffed yourself with meat, cheese and booze, unless you’re vegan, lactose intolerant and teetotal in which case you be you.

Just a note, in the last year it’s become quite clear that you’d prefer to discuss Wie is De Mol? and similar on the Discord rather than the dedicated page, so for the first time I’m not bothering with one and just going to direct you to #molchat in the Bother’s Bar Discord – link in the sidebar. It starts January 1st and it looks like our usual subber Marieke is once again offering to translate for us all – please be mindful not to spoil until those subs have come out.

Happy New Year!

It’s a Christmas Miracle

By | December 23, 2021

That’s us pretty much done for the year, although doubtless I’ll be about on Twitter and Discord over the period. I don’t think there’s anything exciting launching twixt (see we can do Victorian) Christmas and New Year anyway. The Poll of 2021 will launch on January 2nd! And Wie is De Mol starts Jan 1st!

In the meantime, here’s an astonishingly poor judgement call on US Wheel of Fortune. She says all the words, in order, in time, judged to have failed for reasons difficult not to describe as “bullshit”. Happily Audi’s PR department were ON IT.
