It’s New The Genius! It’s New Bloody The Genius!

By | October 2, 2022

I am so excited, I am so excited. Monday night in The Netherlands on NPO3 we’re getting an actual new run of actual bloody The Genius. The best TV show being made in the world from 2013-2015.

The Genius will see 10 smart Dutch people meet up and compete in games of strategy to stay in the competition, earning Garnets (usually awarded for winning games in the most efficient way) along the way which the winner will have turned into prizemoney. Some games are games of mental agility. Some games are games of reading people and bluff. Many have an element of betrayal and double dealing.

If you’re looking for the moment the show goes from “great fun” to “something a bit special”, it’s going to be Jinho playing the Open, Pass game. Contestants have to put together their own deck of cards which when shuffled and dealt out will make an equation with as large a number as possible. It looks like a game of luck… but Starcraft celebrity Jinho realises it isn’t.

If you want to read our thoughts of the series, it started as a “this is interesting you should give it a look” post for series one and each subsequent series got its own discussion page. If you want to go back and watch it, Reddit /r/TheGenius is your friend, which I would link to directly but it looks like Reddit’s down at time of writing.

And now the Dutch are having a go and we’re extremely pleased – they were the first territory to actually buy it up (albeit years ago) and they’re also, with the possible exception of the Flemish, the territory where it’ll most likely have a decent chance.

The original Korean was an extremely stylish show with its manga-oriented titles, Idiotape electronic soundtrack, THAT opening from Moby’s Extreme Ways for its ‘checkmate’ moments and extremely slick editing featuring probably the first time a reality gameshow had used “flash forward” moments as a tease. We don’t know how much of this the Dutch are going to use – immediately there’s a certain change in feel as rather than the four rooms and central hall of the original it looks like a big warehouse with a many sided screen and the electronic garnet badges have been replaced with chalkboard ones, but I’m happy to accept that it’s just a different culture interpreting a show in a different way. We know the Dutch love their found soundtracks, so we’ll likely forgive everything the first time the Moby strings start up if they use them. And are we going to get a Dutch Sangmin hide under a table to eavesdrop at any point?

My only point of concern really is that it looks like from the trailer they’re playing Food Chain as the opening game (which they played on series two of the original) which has plenty of room for drama but is also *quite complex*, especially for an audience who may not be primed as to what the show is about – I might have done Fruit Shop (S3 opener) as it’s a bit easier to get your head around – we’ll see.

Join us in #geniuschat in the Bother’s Bar Discord where more than likely we’ll be dissecting it at length when naughty English subbed versions turn up.

FIGHTING!!!

Incredischeduling

Outside of Bake Off, the three shows that arguably well outperform in terms of 18-34 appeal the best are Married At First Sight (E4), Taskmaster (C4) and Drag Race UK (BBC3).

Thursdays at 9pm currently consist of Married at First Sight (E4), Taskmaster (C4) and Drag Race UK (BBC3).

MAFS won out in the overnights last night, but these are shows that will absolutely outperform in catch-up so I don’t think anyone will be crying just yet.

But isn’t it slightly ridiculous to have the big young skewing shows all competing in the same timeslot when there’s not much of appeal through the rest of the week? I know MAFS is a stripped affair so is more challenging in this regard (and it’s a nice problem for Channel 4 to have) but is it really wise for broadcast television to cannibalise its own audience in such a fashion?

The Bother’s Bar Board of Excitement

By | September 26, 2022

It’s BACK! For one post only. It’s actually a pretty good time for new shows starting so I thought it would be worthwhile doing a Board of Excitement. Here’s what’s coming up in the next fortnight or so:

  • Beauty and the Geek UK – Sunday 25th September on Discovery+ – Apparently this started yesterday, with apparently no fanfare at all. We’ve always quite enjoyed BatG as a format, although it’s doubtful I’ll bother to subscribe to D+ specifically for it.
  • I Literally Just Told You – Monday 26th September, 10:15pm C4 – Footballing special. Of interest, a 65 minute running time.
  • Taskmaster S14 – Thursday 29th September, 9pm C4 – Ó Briain! Brady! Kearns! Chawawa! Millican! Davies! Horne!
  • Floor is Lava S3 – Friday 30th September on Netflix – More like S2.5 (it’s basically the other episodes they recorded) but if you enjoyed series two (and we largely did, although thought the Volcano was a bit meh) you’ll probably enjoy this as well. Don’t know if it’s the same rooms as S2 though.
  • I Literally Just Told You – Friday 30th September, 10pm C4 – The series proper. Of interest, a 65 minute running time.
  • The Genius Netherlands S1 – Monday 3rd October NPO3 and I would imagine naughty internet streaming – OOHHHHMMMYYYGOOOOOODDDD. Absolutely thrilled that the Dutch are having a go, if anyone’s likely to make it work it’s going to be them (although selfishly I want the Flemish to have a go as well). I’m reluctant to publicly post links to English subs and such on the front page, but Reddit is probably going to be your friend.
  • Unbreakable S1 – Thursday 6th October, BBC1 – Rob Beckett puts six celebrity couples to the test in a new series I suspect they’re going to wish wasn’t so easy to jokingly call Unwatchable.
  • The Mole S1 or 6 or 8 depending on how you look at it – Friday 7th October on Netflix – American producers roleplay at making The Mole in Australia, but you never know it might be OK! I suspect it will try and hit the beats whilst lacking the craft, though.

Are we missing anything else interesting?

You’ll find discussion of Taskmaster, The Genius and The Mole in channels on the Bother’s Bar Discord (link in the sidebar) which I suggest you join as the website is a bit of a loss-leader these days, for better or worse. I’m about to buy two more year’s of hosting though, so I can hilariously forget our twentieth birthday in 2024, probably.

Love this

No idea why they’ve just added it, but the set-up makes me laugh so much. You can see the House of Games production element here. It’s fun, it’s mundane, it’s fundane.

Truly the greatest teatowel consolation prize since The Time It Takes.

Apparently the washing-up liquid gets rid of the top ten stains, but regrettably nothing else.

Can we please have a moratorium on that low hissy cymbal roll sound whenever a graphic on set moves?

As featured on *LOW HISSY CYMBAL ROLL* The Tournament whenever someone gets a *LOW HISSY CYMBAL ROLL* question correct every few *LOW HISSY CYMBAL ROLL* seconds or on *LOW HISSY CYMBAL ROLL* Unbeatable whenever *LOW HISSY CYMBAL ROLL* any of the graphics move *LOW HISSY CYMBAL ROLL* at all?

Go bold or don’t do anything at all, because what it currently is is setting my teeth on edge.
