SdH Bonusrunde 24/3/2018

By | March 25, 2018

Missed our Schlag den Henssler Watchalong last night? Well here are the main bonus events our commentators provided.

First! Dan Peake has smashed two more gameshows together to make Wheel of Jeopardy! It’s the most fun you can have with an Excel spreadsheet and remain legal.

Secondly, David Bodycombe treats us to Puzzled Point, a more accessable version of the monthly Puzzled Pint nights. You might want to screencap some of these if you want to have a go yourself.

Fabrizio Frizzi, host of the long-running Italian gameshow L’Eredità has passed away this morning at the age of 60. 🙁

Absolutely, Canale5 will air a rerun of a soap opera instead.
All major networks canceled most of today’s entertainment programming. In addition, instead of their regular bumpers, RAI is showing a picture of Frizzi with the caption CIAO FABRIZIO.

Probably tonight he will ask today’s mystery word to a very special contestant…

AMAZING NEWS FROM THE RECORDING OF SERIES SIX OF TASKMASTER: Greg is wearing glasses in it.

The host of the forthcoming Danish version was also in attendance.

The important followup question: have they put glasses on the trophy?

If they haven’t done so, would that mean it’s not up to spec(s)?

Oh, what’s the name of the Danish host?
I hope I will notice when it airs because TV2 is just watchable with the Dark Arts online.

A man called Larry, he identified himself when the warm-up asked how far people had come and he trumped everyone by saying he was from Copenhagen. Don’t know his full name. Greg invited him to “watch and learn!”.

Was great fun, anyway. What surprised me a bit was how few retakes there were, Greg and Alex do some pick-ups of their intros (the final go at recording the contestant introductions was actually done without the contestants present) but the discussion just veered all over the place and there was no effort made to try and get it in any kind of shape or get them to repeat stuff for the edit. Would be fascinated to see what they do with the bit when Russell Howard got carried away and went down a very long and increasingly rude comedy cul-de-sac and Liza Tarbuck had to more or less tell him to stop talking.

The live task was, er, interesting. Alex said he really liked it. Greg and the contestants clearly didn’t.

In another matter, a Friend of the Bar (if I am allowed to suggest who might deserve that honour) is running a single elimination Twitter poll tournament putting game shows up against each other using the hashtag #GameShowBracket – find the polls on Twitter accordingly, and you can see the bracket itself here. Seven or eight votes in and some of the extremely early voting patterns are remarkable. I can accept that I’m unusual in preferring A Question of Sport to Pointless, but I cannot accept being the first person to have voted for The Mole over Bullseye when six people have already preferred the latter in its matchup. Do have at.

As an aside, the alt.tv.game-shows newsgroup used to do a full 64-team bracket most Marches (an archive quickly finds examples for ’97 to ’02) but the shows were generally US-based, and doing it every – single – year got quite old quite quickly. A UK counterpart, especially when there hasn’t been a ukgameshows.com poll since Big Brother was on Channel 4, is delightful.

I think one of the reasons I stopped doing all-time polls is that I couldn’t find a way of voting that wasn’t a bit reductive. A 1-10 scoring system doesn’t feel right to me when there are 2,000-odd shows you can possibly vote for. It’s also very easily manipulated by production companies called 12 Yard, who I won’t name.

I think some sort of bracket sorting process is probably the way to go these days.
