Bother’s Bar’s RETRO Game Night

By | August 22, 2021

Sunday night, 8pm-10:30pm,
Here and on Youtube

Come with me into my time machine as we travel all-lll-lll-lll the way back through the mists of time, way back to 2014 (and 2015) – a very different era. Obama was president and Trivia Murder Party hadn’t been invented yet.

This is the setting for the 23rd Bother’s Bar Game Night – basically we’re playing old Jackbox games, all to set-up tonight’s Arbitrary Final that’s been co-devised by Duran Duran’s very own Simon Le Bon. Our panellists will be battling it out for glory and a spot in the Jackbox 8 Champion of Champions in October (TBC).

The games might be older, but Team Audience will still be there to take part and judge, and a representative will be required for a game of Bomb Corp. AND tonight’s Final.

The Live stream will appear here, but we advise watching it on the Youtube page for lower latency and so you can join the chat.

    Takeaways from tonight:

    * Evidently there were sound issues, either the stream or the panellists couldn’t hear the SFX which was very strange. I unplugged an unused mic earlier, I wonder if that caused it. Or, I know, I plugged in a controller earlier and perhaps it did something based on that. Anyway, sorry, it wouldn’t be Game Night without sound issues.

    * Good reasons we moved onto newer versions of games, mainly audience ones. Still happy to include Lie Swatter in though.

    * Really glad I included Bomb Corp because of what happened. You need to tell me if it was entertaining to watch as an audience. Don’t know if the panel or stream heard the Funhouse Key Game sound effects, which was annoying.

    * Arbitrary Final – I’ve had the idea for this ages ago – the title sounds like a gameshow, the chorus with a few tweaks could be interpreted as sort of rules. This is probably the first set of questions I sort of enjoyed writing, mainly because inspirations came from Duran Duran songs as a starting point rather than flailing about.

Obviously the theory of it was better than it was in practice, it was a bit of a moderation nightmare. The buzzer system worked well from my end (thanks to Ash the Bash regular Dev, https://bzzr.dev), I didn’t really to penalise people who buzzed in as soon as I hit “activate” because clearly they were being a bit jumpy and misunderstanding rather than false starting per se.

The Danger Line rule was added within the last day. Basically I wanted a fair way to eliminate people who had no chance of winning to keep it crunchy up the top. On my bit of paper, it’s worked out as (the highest score – the X highest amounts left on the board). It stayed at zero for ages because I preferred it to starting at -200 or whatever, but it was secretly counting from the negative figure. Anyway I think I stuffed up the maths somewhere although I think it ended up OK in the end.

Anyway, not the best AF, sound issues not helping, but worth trying out.
