Loving the Welch

We’ve frequently bought up our admiration for the musical stylings of Ed Welch in the past, the Paul Farrer of the 1980s (Knightmare, Catchphrase, All Clued Up, Blockbusters, The $64,000 Question, everything on TVS) so you can imagine our thrill to discover another exciting Youtube channel full of production music (it’s a real trove, but mainly for drama more than entertainment) featured Welch’s arrangement of his theme to New Faces, which in his typical synthesiser form could break into any of his other themes at any time. Incredible.

    Wow.
    The curious thing about that theme is, when parked up in relation to the sheer expense Central had to make, to hire out the Birmingham Hippodrome every week and then turn it into a TV studio (of sorts) by the time it got to the theme thune, it was reduced to Welch, on a single Yamaha keyboard, going through all the pre-set instrument settings.
    No wonder the lads in the orchestra pit played the tune live over the end credit roll. Using this version would have sounded cheap, and everyone couldn’t wait to go home.
