Only Connect series 4 starts on September 6th on BBC4.

To celebrate, here is a question I floated by David B earlier in the year. It’s quite easy, it’s a picture sequence, the question is what would you expect to see in the fourth picture?

Picture 1

Edit: Oh and I’ve messed that right up. Anyway, the pictures are/would have been the MARCH Hare, APRIL O’ Neill (from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Theresa MAY MP (fun fact: when I originally pitched this it was Louisa MAY Alcott) and finally, the one I was after was JUNE Whitfield. Well done Tom!

Sorry Brig. To be fair, I’d have taken a punt at it off ‘March Hare’ anyway, although I would have called for a second one to be sure if I only got one shot.

Not so much that, but it didn’t ramp well – to my mind, clue 2 was by far the hardest.

Really? Anyone under the age of 30 would have got it right off the bat.

Saying that, it would have been better if it started with April and worked forwards or backwards, but I can’t think of anyone named July.

Excellent News about Only Connect – shame I’m in Scotland that week teaching, so I’ll have to catch up with it on iPlayer.

Incidentally, for those interested in what your favourite Accumulate host has been up to over the past months, he’s been thinking up some devious questions. Some for Accumulate, but also for Only Connect.

Two things. One: awesome for Only Connect. Big fan of it.

Two: Just got back from New York to do promo work on Millionaire. New set is incredibly nice. Giant new monitors everywhere. The monitor in the back of the walkway on most versions of the show now is just a side monitor for us, displaying the dollar values. The host walkway has a giant 18 foot wide HD projection screen. The set is now completely 360 degrees. Cameras fly everywhere around the set. Lack of a hot seat didn’t matter. It was pretty fun seeing contestants run around, hugging their family member when they got a right answer. Most startling was the completely new music package that has no similarity to anything previously Millionaire-like, but whatever.

I do like the new show a lot. It was really exciting. Most people seemed sad about the clock being gone, though, which shocked me. The Jumps worked fine. The game worked fine, really. I liked how every question actually meant something. In the past few seasons there has always been the general pattern of leaving at question 7 or 8 and blowing all your lifelines early. This is definitely unpredictable and works. The only thing people in the audience could not seem to connect to is that the dollar values and the question difficulty are now independent. It’s all random now. But this was only the 2nd day of taping. It’ll get better.

Oh, the presentation of everything is extremely similar to Million Pound Drop right now. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

“Quiz fans, prepare to enter crossover heaven this autumn: competing in a special edition of BBC4’s Only Connect will be 2010 University Challenge winners, Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Yes, it’s the TV comeback of Emmanuel skipper and UC legend Alex Guttenplan, trying Only Connect’s tests of lateral thinking. ‘I melted every time I looked at him,’ says OC host Victoria Coren. ‘I kept wanting to hug him and feed him cake. If I had a son, I’d want him to be like Alex.'”

Been meaning to ask this for a while. This looks like a good excuse for it.

If this Yank wanted to take a taste of “Only Connect”, to find out what the reason was for all the hubbub, how would one go about it? It’s hard to find this on YouTube without getting a lot of extraneous references.

From the sound of the descriptions, “Only Connect” would best find a home on our Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)–if PBS weren’t so devoted to educating the public, and to fending off accusations of trying to indoctrinate the selfsame public!

Thanks for the link. I just watched that particular episode.

I stand behind the impression I had previously. This show is very intellectual, very brainy. I don’t know about its general appeal, but it should appeal to the eggheads among us.

Watch out. Some of these contestants could be future champions of “Countdown” or “Mastermind”. Who knows? Some could even wind up as Chasers!

Mark Labbett was on series 2, part of the Rugby Boys. Won the series, beaten in CvC.

Was thinking about what I had seen during my day’s travels, and I’m coming to the conclusion that this is a show of which I’d like to see more.

I note that the teams seem to be formed organically, not just slapped together by the production staff. And they must needs work together as a team–especially in the Connections Wall round. You get an idea of what they are thinking, and that adds to ones appreciation of the challenges.

I have friends who might appreciate this show. Otherwise, they might think this too intelligent for Americans. I rather think that it is a good show for folks with two brain cells to rub together. It’s too bad that BBC America doesn’t run this one. (Instead, we get umpteenth reruns of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”!)
