There are three things you could be doing at half-nine this evening:
- You could watch that Take That film documentary thing on ITV1.
- You could hold on for half an hour for The Million Pound Drop, with special celebrity guests Jimmy Carr and Johnny Vaughan playing for charity.
- You can go to Tom Scott’s site and partake in You vs The World, the professionally done live internet quiz show where nothing can go wrong.

Crickey, the reason why Tom needs a lecture theatre is now becoming clear. We’re playing against 100 real people, all with Millionaire-style voting pads. Awesome.

Well, that was jolly enough. I love the scoring system – it should, inherently, give you a close game every time.
The questions need checking a bit better, though. Bern is in Switzerland, not Austria.

Yep, well aware of sound issues. City University were lovely – they’ve managed to lend us eight Flip cameras and all the audience voting pads, but alas had no lapel mics. Beggars, of course, can’t be choosers 🙂
The Austria screwup was mine, and a bit embarrassing. Questions were written by me and independently verified (ie I sent them to two other people), but I *didn’t* send that bonus text to them. A note for the future! Still, at least it’s not the Million Pound Drop.
Long-term plan: no idea. I had fun. I’d love to do it again, although if I do it’s going to be with a decent mic setup!
And now I’m off to collapse.

Quite good fun, the online component actually worked very well although I’d have locked the online players out at the same time as the studio audience to make Googling more difficult.
And basically I’m not sure I completely got my head around the scoring. And it’s a shame the video porjector had massive shine on its left, and the inset shot covered up the audience score. I also didn’t quite see the point of having the numbers quickly count up (as when one stops, the tension stops), until I realised that they were also being deposited at the bottom of the screens.
That was a fun way to spend half an hour, thanks Tom.

I got them all right except for the Hoplite one, which is a bit embarrassing given my work on Codex.
Yes, I got that one wrong and the Stephen Sondheim one. Surprised so many didn’t know what triple sec was, or who Ian Woosnam was (the comment about being the only one I had heard of was mine).
For some reason, it’s usually the orange (Grand Marnier or triple sec) or cherry (kir/kirsch) liquers that come up in quizzes. I knew Woosnam only because they interviewed him on Radio 4 when Lee Westwood overtook Woods. I was surprised as appearently Westwood was only the 3rd British Number One player (damn, no OC sequence question here).
Sweeney Todd’s a very typical Sondheim musical – lots of clever wordplay but the music’s not up to all that much.
Cheers Brig. I did the best I could with what I had – I have to thank City University for the cameras, auditorium and everything. As a show put together in three days for no money… I’m chuffed.

Once Formula 1 came up I knew the question would be “Who took pole position in Abu Dhabi?”
And it was just like that EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle question last night – really easy for the contestants, and over very quickly…
I didn’t watch qualifying but given I knew only 1 of the answers was German, it was equally easy.
I had a score of 280. Actually, I had a score of 190, plus 90 points for being there during an early test question that I probably wasn’t supposed to be participating in. So yeah, on the whole, I rather sucked tonight.
As far as how scoring worked, I think it was that you would score whatever percentage of (in-studio) people got the question wrong. A question in which more people get it right scores less, a real stumper scores more.
Fun way to spend an hour, definitely. It seemed to lose its home interactivity partway through, possibly because of nobody giving any good tweets (I take part of the blame for this… and my one remark was retweeted!), and especially when the online players don’t affect the scores, but if you’re looking for a quiz to just play along with, you can’t beat a bit of Bully Tom Scottliness.
If it were to be done again, what would I try to improve? Mostly nitpicky tech stuff. Sound issues could be pretty easily fixed with a sound board and a few mics (meaning you don’t have to rely on webcam mics), and there was a bit of a glare on the screen, but it ran rather smoothly otherwise, and especially considering much of this came together in three days, which isn’t a lot of time to get a hold of equipment cheaply. Well done Scott and Co.!

And “bones” was a pretty poor 3rd choice. “Spinal vertebra” would have been better.

Technically, Davina read out the question as one with a different answer.
She actually said “Which street name is THE most common in the UK” and not “Which street name is most common”, which meant the answer to her verbal question was High Street.
The question said “road” names, not “street”. Davina also said “road”.
To Tom Scott, if he happens to check here again (say tomorrow morning after a night of sleep): Thanks again for doing this, it was quite entertaining for all of us, but did YOU have fun with it? I know you were kinda (rather) stressed going into this, and it did show a little bit as the procedings got on, but did you at least enjoy yourself tonight?

I don’t think so as it was shown online. Accumulate! did qualify as it’s shown on local television within Reading University.

So Million Pound Drop back sooner rather than later – hope they put it back to running over a week or two on consecutive nights rather than airing a couple of times a week.
Also need to sort out the obvious issues – questions with definitive answers, and also not messing things up. Apart from the couple of dubious questions MPD had been a slick production so far – but this weekend it seemed to be falling apart – good job the series ended when it did as the next mistake surely is releasing the wrong drop!
Provided what Joe has said it’ll probably be in the spring once Davina finishes Got to Dance. With all this stuff with celebrities I wonder if they’ll consider Comic Relief Does Million Pound Drop Live? Have celebrities on the show for Mon-Thurs in March, all playing for Comic Relief. Since it’ll be good publicity for Endemol and Channel 4 as they haven’t done a Comic Relief thing since Celebrity Big Brother in 2001.
