Happy Christmas!

By | December 23, 2010

Right! I’m away for a few days in theory (i.e. will probably be checking in from time to time) so I’d just like to wish all punters (all 14 of you) a happy Christmas.

A quick glance at Iain’s TV Guide suggests the Only Connect final is on Boxing Day on BBC4, and that Bravo finally Get It and put World’s Strongest Man at the correct time of “between Christmas and New Year” rather than in the middle of January.

Have a good one!

Christmas Day this year falls on the 28th, at least if you’re a banker. And if you’re into such banky levels of pedantry, the annual King William’s College Quiz is up on the Guardian’s website. This quiz is sat as an examination on the last day of term by students at the school on the Isle of Man. It has a reputation for being the toughest quiz on the planet, the offspring of Round Britain Quiz and Only Connect with anything even the slightest bit easy filed off. The one clue we do get is that the answers in some of the sections are thematically linked; if I’m not mistaken, section 7 is a good example.

Bravo are only “getting it” because Sky will be closing down the channel on 1st January.

I believe that because of Bravo and Channel One (formerly Virgin 1) are closing down, more money will go to Challenge and Living for better programming.

Sky Atlantic. A channel similar to Sky1 but showing nothing but US shows. Virgin One will be closing shortly with Living surviving and Challenge moving to Freeview.

Talking about Challenge, it seems from January the channel will be airing for the full 24 hours without any teleshopping. That means the 4am-6am slot will be filled with their original back catalogue, starting with TV Scrabble followed by Defectors in February.

Urgh. Who in their right mind would want a channel only showing U.S. shows? …Unless they’re all game shows, of course.

            Challenge moving to Freeview.

            God bless us everyone!!!

Challenge AND BBC Alba coming to Freeview? Yowsa. (Though it probably does mean no more Farpaisean Chon Chaorach bugless on Tele-G.)

Fort boyard germany is a two team format. Possibly on the same line as the balkans. Passe Partout gets to wear a blue shirt and passe muraille is in red. Starts 11/1/11 at 8:15pm On Kabel eins.

Yes, saw it on ITV Player this morning. It was entertainingly shambolic. Quite enjoyed it.

Is there still a sizable audience who thought the show was always live?

I do not doubt that questions referencing recent events were inspired by some other show.

In real life games news, I have spent the last hour playing the improvised game Dodge The Avalanche (players take it in turns to stand under the edge of a snow-covered sloped roof while the others attempt to dislodge said snow by throwing balls – snow and otherwise – at said roof). After that, “Famous and Fearless” can only look pathetically tame in comparison.

Night 1/3 of our family Christmas quiz. This year, it’s what can only be described as multiplayer The Cube with a bingo machine, Python-programmed scoreboard and custom-composed jukebox running off my laptop hooked up to the HDTV. Scores on the doors so far are: Dad 412, Nan 411, Sister 399, Mum 174, Grandpa 92. WHO WILL WIN?

More to the point, does anyone else do this sort of thing?

    Merry Christmasses, all.

Well if the Beeb are reading and they’re after a workable Cube clone, let’s just say they know where to find me.

The UC/OC special will follow the week after. I don’t know if the champ of champs will be the week after that.

Can we expect an appearance from Chris Quinn in this series of Brain of Britain? It feels like we’re 2 down with 1 to go for the Alesmen. Looking forward to seeing if they end up playing each other later in the contest!

It’s unlikely that Chris Quinn would appear in this series of BoB, as he made the semi-finals last year. Personally, I hope that the draw keeps these two players apart until the final.

I’m actually a bit surprised that someone got a 5-pointer in the final…I think that was the turning point of the match….

Yes, a bit of a hugemungous SPOILER there.

The preview blurb also carried an assertion to the effect that “these players aren’t as good as in previous years”. Hogwash! Nonsense! Mrs. Bramall-Stainer is every bit as good at quizzing as Mr. Stainer. I’d seriously like to see a team from The Rusty Old Radio Times attempt some of these questions. Or even set one of them.

Guessing the top prize will be something like 10 million lek. Because 1 million is only £6,000.
