Show discussion: Silent Library UK

By | July 15, 2011

Just a quickie as I forgot to watch it on Tuesday. It’s on Demand Five until the space year 2016 by the looks of things.

Adam Buxton’s commentary is funny (although there’s not much of it really), but I think the show has lost something in translation – I don’t think there’s enough slapstick and not enough big moments of impact to get them going – the decision to have so many timed challenges works against it I think. The Noiseometer is, er, quite generous as well.

The Noiseometer doesn’t really work like the US one. At least in the US if it hit the red zone then you knew they were going to fail.

Also the librarian shushing them is recorded on it. That’s not exactly fair, is it?

I stumbled across clips of a foregin version (Spain or Italy I think) a few months back and found myself watching more of it than I probably should – but to me it works better as something on Youtube than as a 30-minute TV show.

It is what it is though, but could do with a bit more of something.

I think the thing is, someone having a millipede crawl across their face is quite a bit less funny than someone getting slapped with a fly swatter. In fact I don’t remember a nasty creature element to the US show at all, although I can’t speak as someone with a comprehensive knowledge of that or the original Japanese.

But what I do know is that the episodes of the US show I’ve watched on Youtube made me giggle more.

From looking at back when they had a list of Silent Library USA games on Wiki, there were really no nasty creature things.

They added commentary throughout the show tonight – made it even more annoying.

Though the ‘less time based stuff’ and the ‘more (literally) impactful’ stuff both helped it a bit.
