Board of Excitement 17th – 23rd July 2011:

By | July 17, 2011

Much like last week, but with less in it:

  • Big Brother US (Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, CBS)
  • The Amazing Race Australia (Monday, Seven Network)
  • Fort Boyard 2010: Episode seven, which by my reckoning makes it the Grand Final. So goodness knows what they’ve got to show for the eighth episode in the run. (8pm, Monday, TV5)
  • 101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow (Tuesday, ABC)
  • It’s Worth What? A watch, hopefully. Price collectable items in a bid to win a million.  (Tuesday, NBC)
  • Fort Boyard 2011 – almost a million-and-a-half up on last year’s series. Amazing. (7:35pm UK/8:35 Europe, Saturday, France 2)

Given it’s late and Ratings Bear is probably asleep, here are the ratings from last night and it’s not good reading for ITV.

    Tonight’s The Night: 4.53m (22.4%)
In It To Win It: 5.35m (25.7%)
    Odd One In: 2.32m (11.1%) +1: 233k
    Penn & Teller: Fool Us: 2.96m (13.9%) +1: 241k
    The Marriage Ref: 1.51m (8.6%)

In It to Win It has now won the Saturday night entertainment battle four weeks in a row. I thought having the ITV schedule move back an hour would help but it’s become worse. For Dale Winton beating Bradley Walsh by DOUBLE the ratings is something. To quote Jeremy Clarkson from earlier “it’s not a win, it’s a demolition”.

Once thing is certain, BBC One have solved the problem with last year’s summer schedule by having Tonight’s the Night swapping slots and using a popular lottery show than recomissioning 101 Ways.

This time last year, 17th July
    101 Ways to Leave a Game Show – 4.05m (7.00pm)
    Tonight’s the Night – 4.32m (8.00pm)

This week also sees the debut of “It’s Worth What?” (Tuesday, 8-9 PM, NBC).

When this show was announced, blogsters thought that it was going to be a takeoff on “Antiques Roadshow”, a long-established PBS feature in which folks go to upscale jumble sales and let other folks know that their tchotchkes are actually worth modest fortunes.

Turns out that it’s more like one of the pricing games on “The Price Is Right”. Cedric the Entertainer hosts, and this may be the most mainstream thing he has ever done.

This week’s UC features the first Oxbridge clash of the series: Worcester Oxford vs Clare Cambridge.

Worcester are making their third appearance in the Paxman Era. In their first, in 2002/3, they reached the quarter-finals, and in their second, in 2007/8, they squeezed past one Cambridge college before being well beaten by another (Pembroke and Trinity Hall respectively).

Coincidentally, Clare also made their PE debut in 2002/3 (losing to eventual champions Birkbeck London in round two) and are making their third appearance. Their second was in 2009/10, when they found Jesus Oxford and UCL too hot to handle.

This series hasn’t got off to the greatest of starts, with two unspectacular matches (although Birmingham’s Kirk Surgener did well on the buzzer last week), and Paxo yet to really show his true colours. Will that change tonight? 😕
