Dara O Briain’s University of Practical Mathematics has been picked up for an eight-week run on Dave. In it, people are challenged to solve problems – O Briain using his mathematical background and a special guest trying more practical methods.

Based on a Japanese Beat Takeshi format (Comăneci University Mathematics, apparently) we’ll try and find some Youtube clippage over the weekend (although don’t get too excited).

It’s our favourite Irish TV house Wild Rover co-production.

This was that thing originally piloted for BBC Four waaaay back in something like 2008, wasn’t it? Good to see that there are other options for good ideas to go to if the BBC is withdrawing from high-minded entertainment.

I saw a call for “charismatic undergraduate mathematicians”, where “female candidates are preferable”, for a BBC4 pilot. But that was last year.

At the time they wanted 2 teams, each containing a comedian and a mathematician. If it is the same programme, then clearly a lot has changed.
