Board of Excitement: 12th – 17th September 2011

By | September 12, 2011

Well it’s both very warm and blowing a gale out, so you might as well stay in and watch telly:

  • Only Connect – Fantasy Footballers vs Antiquarians. I’m planning on putting a team together based solely around the fact we have aliterating names. (8:30pm, Monday, BBC4)
  • Minute to Win It (8pm, Tuesday, ITV2)
  • 71 Degrees North – With new hosts Paddy McGuinness and Charlotte Jackson out in Norway. There’s “Norway” I’m going to miss this!!!! (9pm, Tuesday, ITV1)
  • Survivor: South Pacific – New series. Ozzy and Coach return. (Wednesday, CBS)
  • Schlag den Star – Guido Cantz, who hosted Deutsche Deal or No Deal. (7:15pm, Thursday, Pro Sieben)
  • Epic Win – Intriguingly followed by Celebrity Masterchef. (5:30pm, Saturday, BBC1)
  • Schlag den Raab – Episode 30 and €1.5m to be defended. It seems a bit odd having this and Schlag den Star in the same week, but there we are. (7:15pm, Saturday, Pro Sieben)

    The listing for 71 Degrees North..
    9pm Tuesday – wrong ITV channel. It’s on ITV1 not 2.

    Shows I’m still awake, I suppose..

    Just a note that I’ve noticed Pointless finally comes to Challenge tomorrow at 8pm, daily. (Why they’ve started on a Tuesday rather than Monday is beyond me!) – Presumably Series 1 judging by how Alexander looked on the adverts.
    Also on the subject of Pointless – a very slight error on its ukgameshows.com entry – the new Round One variant appeared for the first time last Thursday and we’re now technically in Series 5 rather than Series 4.

        Just looked at the new website, and the only word that springs to mind is ‘garish’. Yellow and pink? Seriously?

      Looking at Digiguide, it will start at episode 2 tonight and not from the beginning. They have also omitted episode 6 as well.

        I can understand the new look idea (although from the glimpses I’ve seen of the new look it looks pretty garish and frankly poor).
        As for your spot on Digiguide – what’s the point of that?!?! (No pun intended…)

    Brilliant episode of the OC tonight. Probably no harder or easier than usual, but it so happened that virtually all the correct answers that have eluded me all series so far cropped up tonight.

      Glad you enjoyed – it helps when you have teams that are good at the quiz as well as willing to have a bit of fun.

      Watching the comments on #onlyconnect is quite interesting. I think most people found episode 3 the easiest, but otherwise we get an equal amount of comments saying it’s easier/harder than they’re expecting.

      I do worry about the people who get nothing all show, not even a vowel question.

        Incidentally, just noticed that every winning team so far this series has scored either 26 or 27 points. If that’s not world-class question editing consistency…

        You got me on the Very Hungry Caterpillar question- I was thinking fruit bonuses in Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man (and loved Victoria’s aside after that question too)…

    It’s time for Questions Too Obscure for Only Connect!

    7 = spiral
    8 = TV test card
    9 = shattered glass
    10 = ?

      Questions too ESOTERIC, David, ESOTERIC.

      Anyway 10 = Fingerprint, as any fule know.

      Incidentally, TV Ark has updated with titles from The Syndicate with Nick Ross (understand?), The Price Is Right from 1984 AND! You Bet from 1997.

        I actually rather like the ’97 You Bet, but that WAS becasue that was the one I started watching from.

            Couldn’t quite hold a candle to Jonathan Sorrell’s package, though… 😉

        I totally fail to understand this one, other than a gut feeling that there is likely to be a connection with the letters G, H, I and J (else why quote 7, 8, 9 and 10?) but it does suggest to me that it would be esoteric fun to have a sequence based around the pseudo-scientific images in the opening credits (with the rockin’ tune) to the second series of Look Around You.

        I’m glad Vicky Coren never appeared on Look Around You; if they had offered her thanks then it would have ended poorly.

      Ohh – I don’t know.
      The hosts of The Tonight Show question was heading out towards left-field for the target audience of OC for me.

      Didn’t stop me nailing on the 5 points one on that one though. I’ve been feeling smug about that all day!

        Er, what target audience?

        If you’re talking about it being non-UK, it was a pretty major showbiz story over here too.

    RE: Fort Boyard Netherlands- if there’s a key difference, the leading team gets 2 minutes, the trailing team has to wait 10 seconds per key behind before they can enter the treasure room (though they do get a slight advantage in that the gate is open all the way when they start).

      Is it wrong of me to be slightly irked that they’ve not bothered updating the website – despite clearly having introduced a totally new channel identity? Not exactly cohesive branding, is it?

      Capital letters in a speech bubble, though – not sensationally original.

          It’s back to the new one, it appears that for a while you could access the old one at challenge.co.uk without the www. but that’s a redirect now.

          Would this not have made more sense next week, though, when it goes 24/7 on Freeview everywhere. Could they have pulled the trigger on the rebrand a week too early by mistake? This is Challenge, after all.

    Just watched 71 Degrees and i have to say i much prefer the focus on the challenges, the new series appears to have. This change gives the show a much more entertaing feel, rather than just watching zelebs argue in the snow.

    I was not expecing to enjoy this as much as i did.

      I watched the first half of this last night (will watch the second half tonight) – I enjoyed it, although I hope the challenges aren’t exactly the same as last year’s.

      I’m not immediately convinced by Paddy McGuinness, but we’ll see.

    Did anyone see SdStar tonight? I had to miss it due to work, and I’m afraid I’m going to get called into work on Saturday.
