Bob Holness

Sorry I’ve just heard about this (been at Pointless, will write about later), very sad to hear about Bob Holness’ passing.

I’m afraid the best I can do at this short notice is link to this Gameshow Marathon Blockbusters retrospective:

As someone who grew up watching Blockbusters when he was a wee sprog, therefore starting my whole interest in quiz/game shows, it’s rather saddening to hear of his passing.

    RIP Bob.

If I never watched Blockbusters, I would never have been a fan of quiz shows. Bob was an absolute professional, and his death is a sad loss to the world of television.

What’s odd is that I gave my Blockbusters board game to charity just before Christmas. I wish I hadn’t now.

    Rest in Peace Bob.

Bob Holness was an absolute legend: blessed with one of the greatest voices of any age, and with a charming personality to go with it. My schoolmates didn’t do at all well when they played Blockbusters, but by jove we had a day.

I don’t believe there’s an episode of Raise the Roof on the Fun Thing Found site, but here’s an interview from 1995, and Bob is 8.33% of this stellar celebrity Fifteen-to-One lineup from Christmas 1990.

I was at Pointless yesterday afternoon. If Richard asking Xander if he’s aroused by a zither in a basque doesn’t make the edit, I’ll be very disappointed.

Bob was an absolute legend, the most deserving person of the title ‘Gameshow God’. I’ve heard though Facebook that Challenge will be planning a tribute to Bob at some point and dedicated tonight’s 2 Blockbusters episodes to him, saying “We all remember Bob Holness who passed away today, our thoughts are with his friends and family”.

This has properly bummed me out, I remember watching Blockbusters and Raise the Roof whenever I could. Blockbusters was one of the few quiz shows at the time my dad would actually watch so it became ritual in our house. I also latched onto Call My Bluff later on because Bob was hosting. I think he just connected with the audience and the contestants in a way few other hosts have ever been able to do and that’s why so many people are so reverent about him and the shows he’s done. Its rare that someone can build up so much good faith with one show that nobody really minds that their next one flopped.

Coincidentally, Basic Instinct featured as the answer to one of the two ‘risqué’ questions (that they deliberately inject each night to look a bit edgy) on tonight’s *ank Job.

Although I realise this comment is irrelevant to anybody who hasn’t watched the Raise the Roof clip on Buzzerblog as that’s what I was referring to there…
