Schlag den Raab – 14th April 2012

By | April 14, 2012

Schlag den Raab – 7:15pm UK time, Pro Sieben (and hopefully naughty internet streaming)

And if The Cube wasn’t exciting enough tonight Stefan Raab defends €1.5m live on German television. Also: Rebecca Ferguson off of The X Factor is one of the super special guests.

I wonder if they’ll play viewer favourite Tischdecke again?

Tonight’s candidates are Reint, Matthias, Sabine, Markus and Tobias. Going off first impressions, I’d most like to see either Reint or Tobias take on Stefan, but we’ll see how Germany voted later on…

I think I just heard the next SdR will be on the 5th of May.

And the results are in! Let’s see who’ll be taking on Stefan tonight…

    It’s not Tobias
    It’s not Matthias
    It’s not Sabine
    And it’s not Markus

    So tonight’s contender is…REINT!

A reminder of the rules, meeting the doctor and commentator, a quick chat with Reint’s family and friends, and the battle for €1.5m begins with…

SPIEL 1 – Die Torwand (Goal Wall)

The game that was the 15th game last month and it’s the first game this time! Let’s hope Reint won’t fluff it like Alex did!

Reint goes first, takes his time and kicks it cleanly.
Stefan now, a couple of practice kicks and he kicks it squarely in the centre.
Reint’s second kick is a little higher than his first, but still makes it.
Stefan’s second kick, a little high, but still makes it himself.
Reint’s third kick, makes it perfectly.
Stefan’s third kick, no problems so the shooting marker is pulled back.
    Reint’s fourth kick, perfect.
Stefan’s fourth kick, and he kicks it wide to the right!

    Reint takes the first game

    Reint 1 – 0 Stefan

And game one is… PENALTY SHOOT OUT. Using the exact same set up as the last game of the previous SdR. Brilliant!

AND REINT WINS – IT’S NOT A TOTAL WHITEWASH!

Spiel 2 – Bundelander (or something)

Name the German county that contains these German towns. First to six wins. This isn’t the most UK friendly game.

    SPIEL 2 – Bundesländer (States)

By the looks of things, a list of towns or cities are read out and Stefan and Reint must buzz in when they think they know which German state they’re in. Usual rules apply, get it right to earn a point, get it wrong and the opponent gets a point. First to 6 wins. I’l post a picture if I can so you know how the game works.

    Stefan takes the game 6-1

    Reint 1 – 2 Stefan

Midway through the javelin, looks like Stefan has just twisted his knee, hopefully won’t affect too much.

    Reply
    1. Alex S

It also looks like they’ve been taking the measurements from where the javelin stopped, rather than where it first hit the ground, which has played to Stefan’s advantage as all of his have slid a good few metres after landing.

We’re back from break, and as Daniel has said…

SPIEL 3 – Speerwerfen (Javelin), and we’re outside for this one.

The coin toss lands red, so Reint will go first after a quick commercial. The winner will be whoever throws the javelin the furthest single distance after 6 throws each.

    Reint – Throw 1 – 26.10m
    Stefan – Throw 1 – 30.13m

    Reint – Throw 2 – 25.97m
    Stefan – Throw 2 – 29.66m

    Reint – Throw 3 – 24.97m
    Stefan – Throw 3 – 31.71m

    Reint – Throw 4 – 24.69m
Stefan – Throw 4 – 25.97m and he’s hurt his knee, a sprained or twisted muscle by the looks of things. Will he be able to continue?

While Stefan goes off for medical attention, Reint must now beat 31.71m to win in 2 throws
    Reint – Throw 5 – 25.35m

    Reint – Throw 6 – 30.49m

The way Stefan was throwing the javelins, they bounced instead of sticking in the ground, but it was still enough to give him the win.

    Reint 1 – 5 Stefan

  9. Andy "Kesh" Sullivan

    SPIEL 4 – Cross-Verfolgung (Cross tracking)

And it’s a no-contest due to Stefan’s injury, so the 4 points are automatically given to Reint.

    Reint 5 – 5 Stefan

Huge clanger on In It To Win It just now. Question was:

“The Battle of Agincourt took place during which war?
    – War of the Roses
    – Napoleonic Wars
    – Hundred Years’ War”

They said the correct answer was B. In fact, it was C.

Contestant chose A, so luckily not a game changer.

I wonder how the game’s going to go now, seeing as Stefan’s been injured. Do you think they’ll have to re-jig the games around so there’s no physical games, or will they just keep giving Reint the points like they did for Game 4?

  12. Andy "Kesh" Sullivan

    SPIEL 5 – Marienkäfer (Ladybird)

A number of ladybirds appear on the screen, and Stefan and Reint must buzz in with the correct number of spots. Usual rules apply, first to 5.

SPIEL 6 – Die Kugel (The Ball)

2 stagehands bring on a wooden contraption similar to the keybox challenge from TORE! 2 metal rods that must be pulled apart to allow the ball to roll and drop into one of 6 scoring holes from 0-5 (0 furthest from them to 5 nearest to them). 0 points are scored if the ball falls off the contraption. The winner will be whoever has the highest score after 10 turns each.

    Reint – 3 3 1 0 1 0 3 X X X = 11
    Stefan – 4 5 5 4 5 4 0 X X X = 27

As you can see, Stefan managed to get to grips with the game better than Reint. Stefan had too much of a lead so Reint couldn’t come back even if he got all 5’s

The clamshell doors open up to reveal 2 tables, one red, one blue. On each table is a jigsaw puzzle of a puppy and a kitten, and a bell. Whoever finishes the jigsaw and rings the bell first wins.

Reint finished well ahead of Stefan!

    SPIEL 8 – Diktat (Dictation)

Both Stefan and Reint wear headphones and 100 words are read rather quickly by alternating male and female voices. They must then write down as many words as they can on the clipboard. They then take it in turns to read words off their lists, 15 seconds per turn. First one to make a mistake loses.

Reint wins the game, and Stefan complains about a Brille! 😀

    SPIEL 9 – Muttern (Nuts)

The stagehands bring out 2 contraptions that look like hangman gallows with a large bolt through the crossbar. On lecterns are 20 large metal nuts each. It’s a race to get all 20 nuts on their bolt first.

Stefan goes for a 2-handed technique with 2 nuts at a time while Reint goes for 2 at a time. Stefan has trouble threading his nuts onto the bolt, giving Reint an advantage.

Reint manages to get all his nuts on his bolt while Stefan had 6 nuts to go.

Stefan wasted a lot of time getting the nuts too high up on the pole – it didn’t need that much space to fit all the nuts. I guess that was one of the traps.

Going backstage for this one, and Stefan’s still having trouble with his knee.

We all know how this works, 3 frames of 9-pin bowling and you can place your score in one of the 3 scoring slots. Whoever has the highest 3-digit number wins the game. This will be a best of 5.

Both Stefan and Reint get gutter balls on their first bowls, and they both put them in slot 3.
Stefan’s 2nd bowl gets him an 8 and he places it in slot 1.
Reint’s 2nd bowl gets him a 6 and he places it in slot 2.
Stefan’s 3rd bowl gets him a 5, so Reint needs an 8 or 9 to win.

Blamieren oder Kassieren is basically a straight quiz, first to seven, wrong answers give away a point and the opponent also gets the chance to answer for a bonus point (although if they do and get it wrong then the original person also getd a point).

It’s based on a regular feature on TV Total. Or at least I thought it was.

SPIEL 13 – Schnipski (You’re on your own for a translation, Google Translate has nothing!)

The stagehands bring out a horseshoe or magnet-shaped wooden structure with lines marked on the ‘arms’. Stefan and Reint have a draughtsman each, one white, one black. Stefan is using white, Reint is using black.

The game seems to involve flicking the draughtsman around this course without it falling off or you go back to the start.

It appears to be a race. Stefan and Reint take turns flicking their draughtsmen around the board, first OVER the finish line (as in, the counter has to have completely crossed the line) wins. Best of 3, if I heard correctly.

Stefan takes the first round of Schnipski, and it is indeed a best of 3 as Lewis has rightly stated 🙂

Reint is letting himself down here by flicking his draughtsman too hard and falling off the course.

Sorry that I left after the first few games – I got called away but was able to continue watching the game. I thought it was a bit of a damp squib, as SdR evenings go – some good but not epic games (I very much enjoyed Muttern though, brilliant idea).

The games tended to be one sided, one way or the other – and it looks like the producers had some less physical games on standby in case of Raab injuring himself on the mountain biking (would have been game 5). Raab does like to tear himself apart, doesn’t he.

Anyway, well up for the €2m SdR night.

SdR is interesting and unusual – we don’t tend to have live open-ended six hour gameshows over here! And I’m always interested to see what they come up with, even if it ends up being a fifty-minute tablecloth pulling competition.

I’ll second that, it’s the variety of games that are played that got me hooked on SdR, plus I somewhat understand German after studying it at school, so I sort of have an idea of what’s being said which helps me with my play-by-plays when I do them.

The variety is astounding, from questions, to mountain biking to the infamous Toaster Watching (my personal favourite).

I also like the fact that it’s live, and thus anything can happen (and usually does). It just oozes epicness that we can’t seem to capture.

As soon as I heard they weren’t going to do Beat the Star live, I knew it wasn’t going to do the job. The whole point of taking on a format from another broadcaster is that you keep the good bits, and here one of the good bits was the live and unexpected nature of it.

OK, maybe they couldn’t afford to start it at 7pm on a Saturday and let it run all evening, but it could easily have started at, what, 9 or even 10 and let it run for 2-3 hours.

Also, they ruined it by making it a weekly thing too soon, rather than as a special to be rolled out on a quiet Bank Holiday. It’s not like we’re going to miss You Only Live Twice repeated for the 17th time.

And don’t even get me started as to where all the money went on series 2. (I’m genuinely quite cross about this, as you can possibly tell.)

          2. Travis P

I always imagine the show airing live would work on a channel like Sky1. A channel that has got no restrictions (news bulletins) if it ever overruns.

I found the first series brilliant and didn’t mind having it weekly but I always question the decision to produce the second series in the UK. Surely it was dirt cheap to film it in Cologne since they got hundreds of games in the cupboard. No need to spend £500,000 (or whatever it cost) to create a dirt track showing a configure of eight.

David does have a point about that it should’ve been aired occasionally. Even the German version decided to have each series run for four shows. It would be easy to copy their formula but to have a couple of music interludes. Nine games within two hours with someone like JLS performing half way through the show.

  36. Mart with a Y not an I

I’m curious as to where most of the money went to in series 2. Pinewood Stage S or R and the backlot and 2 Arena OB scanners didn’t charge that much for tech facilities/studio rent did they?

A live Beat The Star would still work now.

Some of the games with a bit of product placement would help with the budget – and if ITV1 did allocate around 2 hours for the running time (obviously we wouldn’t go for the best of 99 game style endurance marathons that SdR goes in for) which sailed dangerously close to using up the allocation of airtime, they have the luxury of switching the show to across to ITV2 or ITV4.

Are Channel 4 still looking for a regular live event programme – or is that now The Million Quid Drop (and to a very lesser extent The Bank Job) domain. If they are – Beat The Star could fill that remit..
