Celebrity players are so second-rate. Their hearts aren’t just in it, they don’t practice, and they’re usually just not very good at all. I predict he’ll make it to the £20k game with only three lives left but then lose it all (except for £1k, of course) when he tries to play Ele–

    Oh wait.

    Barrier?!

Thought it was meant to bring back one of the ones he struggled at!

That can’t happen if he didn’t struggle at ANY of them! (I’m guessing there’s no £250k level of Response, it would have to be an insane reaction time)

Incidentally, I said something months ago about Barrier, and it being a shame that it’s such a “well-loved” game. I also said nobody would remember I said it when the time came, so I’m guessing nobody does.

Well, many/most of the jackpot games have just that … an “insane” setting, which is why we’ve never seen one attempted (except in Portugal) until now.

Just last week in Spain, the jackpot game was Assemble … in the main game, the time limit was 10 seconds, the Simplify changed it to 12, but the jackpot setting was *six* seconds, which in my book is darned near impossible.

          Assemble? I’m guessing it’s Structure.

Also the Portuguese version IIRC plays the final game just like a normal other game. Their final game was Barrier, a non-repeating game on its normal, two-bar setting.

Much to my surprise, the entire Portuguese series of O Cubo is still online at RTP’s website and isn’t geoblocked. So I was able to go back and watch the relevant episode:

And, yes (arrrrgh!), Barrier was again the jackpot game. But Barrier was also played earlier in that stack as Game 5. Perhaps because the show was still new-ish at that point worldwide (or perhaps because the producers just wanted a winner there, too), there was only one barrier to cross in Game 5. In the jackpot game, there were two barriers of very different heights, but the contestant still had his Simplify available, which reduced them to the same height.

The final game starts at about 48:25 in the video.

OK, I’ve gotta say it. That was way too easy. Even if I hadn’t known the outcome, it would have felt like the producers wanted a winner. Compared to some of the other jackpot games we’ve seen, yes, way way too easy. I’ll go crawl back under my rock now.

I suspect that they knew they were going to be getting the iconic moment out of this game and decided they’d have it happen on what they obviously think is the show’s iconic game.

Presumably they would never be evil enough to bring back the £100k game? I reckon that would have been the biggest struggle had the Simplify not made the polo hole so much larger…

Anyway I was just watching again. Like the little touch of having the game name highlighted in orange rather than red for the £250k game, but I cannot quite work out if the ‘Do de da de du de dah de du de da da deeee’ is a different tone from the £100k game or not!

Beautiful direction, beautiful symbolism – the host finally in the Cube for the first time ever! – and appropriate music, even if not quite as spectacular as the Millionaire million win cue. If this is the last series, a great way to go.
