        Urgh.

That bloody ruins YT. Both that and forever repeating moments that are funny at various speeds until they’re no longer funny (a concept later done on Wipeout).

Why did The Games end, anyway?

Did C4 and Endemol feel that it was too expensive to produce – or were they simply far more interested in BB?

Low viewing figures? Wasn’t on around Easter time? Another factor could have been what did the BBC revival of Superstars in.

      Medical insurance.

I would guess unlike the 70’s where the stars were happy to accept bumps, bashes and bruises as part of the whole experience, nowadays it’s about which private hospital they are going to have their broken fingernails MRI’ed at.

As soon as a hamstring is torn or an ankle is broken, then the premium payments kick in and cost for covering 8 celebs goes right up and if that becomes a significant part of the budget – the show is in trouble…

I think it ended when C4 decided to make Celebrity Big Brother an annual thing. Easily one of the best celebrity shows – mainly as the celebs had to do some work and were judged on results, not popularity. Ended far too soon – and would have liked to have seen a Winter version too.

Talking of Superstars though Australia had a great updated version of the format – “Australia’s Greatest Athlete”, which ran from 2009 to 2011. http://www.greatestathlete.com Basically 8 athletes competing over 8 weeks, two events a week – one with most points wins. Would work great on ITV4.

It’s a sheepdog (Summer Olympic Mascots- 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992); I’m just glad you didn’t go with the 1996 one, because even we in the US couldn’t explain that one….

It’s almost as if no-one watched Blue Peter’s Big Olympic Tour, in which Barney and Helen were joined by child-friendly stars (Brendan Strictly, MC Romeo, Laura Wright, Adele Silva) and took on nine sports as varied as sprinting, BMXing, canoeing, and gymnastics.

There were no bellyflops, host Dan Walker didn’t have Jamie Theakston’s eyebrows, and there was no beating Skelton.

The Games desperately needs to make a comeback!! The E4 show afterwards was JLC’s finest hour by some way. And the theme tune was awesome as well.

The theme tune was Dobs Vyes best work (even better than Beat The Star.. and the theme he did for Sky News that was pulled after 6 months because of ‘legal reasons’)

The Games was a quality show, and any show that employed Steve Bunce doing a pariody of himself as the excitable pundit was ok in my book.

A revival has to come around again.
Probably a bit too soon for a week long show leading upto Children In Need, but I’ve thought that when Sport Relief comes around again in 2014, maybe the BBC should wander down Wood Lane and over Sheperds Bush Green and knock on the door of Endemol and ask – “so, what about it, eh?”

a small, probably fairly unamusing, anecdote related to the clip. about a week after that series of the games, Peter Duncan compared a show i was in (in his role of chief scout). he twice ignored calls of “i could have done better than 4th!” from the crowd.

and two things from scrolling through the cellar link provided. one, its crazy how right brig sounds about strictly, and how absolutely wrong he was. and secondly, im very annoyed that challenge used to show things like us survivor, whereas now its double bills of chain letters.
