Eurovision 2013! The Semi-Finals

By | May 13, 2013

Tuesday and Thursday 8pm (UK time),
BBC 3

euvomalmo2013A general post for the Eurovision Semi-Finals this week, as the advent of Twitter has rather made live discussion of them less fun in a place like this – not a complaint, just a comment!

BBC3 will be showing the semi-finals with Scott Mills and Ana Matronic from The Scissor Sisters (who are currently on “indefinite hiatus”, sadly). We in the UK can vote in Tuesday’s heat, but not the Thursday one. Interestingly, Tuesday is the one with Ireland in it, but it’s not Jedward this year so it probably won’t affect the results.

Regrettably work commitments mean I will be missing Tuesday one, and probably a bit of Thursdays as well. As I’ve not followed the Eurovision at all this year really, it should make for a nice surprise come Saturday’s big final.

Here’s a link to the BBC site, as that’s where I’ve nicked the picture from.

If you’re outside of Europe, you can still usually watch! Eurovision.tv usually carries an ungeoblocked stream, and it’s official too. If you’re watching from outside of Europe, do let us know what you think.

Please feel free to leave any Eurovisiony comments here. A separate post will go up for the grand final on Saturday.

    (It’s me!)
I still don’t like Euphoria, but if they’d submitted an orchestral version of it like they started the show with I’d have been less upset that it won.

I think The Netherlands actually sent a good song this year.
How long has it been since that last happened? 9/10 for me. I’m gonna be humming the chorus for ages.

Thing is, the last few years they’ve done really good songs (2011 onwards). It’s just that nobody really remembers them on the night :/

REALLY hoping this year’s different though.

Hrm. Quite disappointed Croatia didn’t go through, but can’t honesty say I expected them to.

I don’t know if the crowd cheering at the end meant much, but I do hope the Dutch do well on Saturday.

Meaning the Netherlands end their nine-year drought, the longest absence in ESC (not counting abstinence periods).

I did hear a few “Netherlands” chants during the tenth pick. I don’t think it’s going to win…

…but oh, I’d be so pleased if it did.

I voted for the Netherlands. That was a nervous ending to the semi-final…

Really, really liked that, though I could see why people would think of it as a bit dour. After the Danish singer’s awful breathy low notes (and she’s the favourite how? Is it the outrageously arrogant golden shower effect at the end?), Anouk was all the better to hear.

Can’t see her getting that far in the final though (and I’m quite sure my vote meant nothing, as she’ll probably have got nil points from the UK in the semi and probably will again in the final)…

Emmelie de Forest tries hard to be the second Marina And The Diamonds, but her modest success and arrogance works against her (earlier this year, Emmelie stated she was a grand-grand-granddaughter of Queen Victoria, a fact several genealogists dispute).

I wonder if she tries to be a/reacts like Kelly Clarkson* if a dark horse seizes the victory this Saturday.

(Kelly Clarkson was pipped by a Norwegian plumber at World Idol (2003/2004) and was an utter bad sport.)

A bit of controversy tonight. People are crying foul at Hungary, Greece, Romania and Armenia getting through and Israel and the fans 2nd favourite San Marino going out.

I am however pleased that Iceland made it, I was expecting it to bomb badly.

I’ve backed good San Marino songs in the past and they’ve never gone through, so I’m not sure this is hugely significant.

Israel not going through it a biggie.

There are reasons why these entries got through. Hungary, because the juries will have loved it. Greece got through because it’s Greece. Romania got through because it was last on and was possibly worth watching again. Armenia because of the Armenian expat vote and the Black Sabbath vote.

San Marino missed out from being second up and the most obvious cut-and-paste job joining two songs into one. Israel missed out because 11 decent (or better) songs can’t squeeze into 10 spots. It’s the first time Israel have missed out on Saturday night since – er – last year, when they was properly robbed.

        Has anyone seen Yugoslavia?
