Look out! Here comes a river of money!

By | September 12, 2013

Forget yer Million Second Quizzes, Challenge have re-acquired old Channel 5 show Whittle with Tim Vine. AMAZING. Don’t know when they’ll start going out though. Edit: Series 1 will go out in January.

Whittle was the daily low-rent version of Everybody’s Equal with Chris Tarrant where up to 100 people (depending if all the coach loads arrived) answer multiple choice questions being eliminated with wrong answers. The last one standing won £250 (“whoooo!”) and could win a further £250 by putting four things in order. If they failed, everybody in the audience playing along who got it correct split the money. It was basically a proto-Millionaire.

It was also a very popular daily show in France (under the title Que Le Meilleur Gagne and hosted by the ever popular Nagui), and was actually bought back last year as a 20 episode event with bigger money and studio but hasn’t been seen since.

Given that apparently Challenge apparently can’t handle trick stereo on their playout systems here’s hoping they manage the same with that episode of Whittle where two edits were run together survives intact.

Hang on, wasn’t it “mmmmm” for £250?

Do they have series two as well? I’m on that and am not sure whether I welcome the further repeats or not. (SPOILER! alert: in three episodes, I won the total of £7.14!)

I can confirm, from both memory and having watched old episodes on YouTube, that the catchphrase was “Mmmmm…”

Gerry Scotti successfully hosted this in Italy in 1993 (Campionissimo) and 1996 (Vinca Il Migliore).
There were 200 contestants per episode and the winner took home a nice prize (a fur coat or a trip). The final question was for 5,000,000 lire (about £2100)

The annoying thing with Everybody’s Equal, and to a large extent Whittle, was that the questions were far too easy to differentiate between the players – so, often the timed question would have to weed 63 players down to 10. And an extra question or two to pick up the pace would’ve been good as well.

The other problem is that you’d get goofy looking kids on it like this: http://bit.ly/1b9GicG
