Well here’s a new reality competition format…VH1 in the US has picked up Twinning for next summer- 12 teams of twins compete in competitions to test the theory that twins have a unique bond..winners get $222,222.22.

Here’s something to fill a slight gap in my well of knowledge.
Shows like this – Only Connect celebrity charity specials.

When VCM said at the start of the show “we are here raising money for Children In Need”, apart from the vt insert at the start, the pudsey ears for the missing vowels round and the website address on screen sporadically – what else does that mean?

Given there is no cash prize per show on OC (unlike some other shows with prize money – The Chase/Pointless Celebrities for instance where it’s obvious where the winning money has come from and is going to), there is nothing to be donated, so (and I’m expecting an answer without cold hard cash figures) does that mean that Victoria, the clebs, and crew produced that show for nothing and the production company took their regulation cut of the budget and it;s all was donated to the CIN kitty?

Curious to know how specials like that work.

I believe this is how it works: Because the programme is effectively replacing what would have been a regular evening of entertainment programming, which the BBC would have funded in any case, then the show is paid for by the BBC in the usual manner. Everyone working on the show would get their usual fee, because it was their job to produce that show. That the show is going out on CiN or as part of that week is co-incidental.

That said, and I recognise this is something of a double standard, it would look bad if supposedly “well paid” celebrities took a fee. As such, I believe the OC celebs appear for free. The programme is produced on the basis that the viewers would like it enough to contribute money to the charity.

So generally, the BBC pays for everything but some things are volunteered. It’s worth noting that Terry Wogan himself was paid a not insubstantial fee every year for hosting the show (worth £9000 in 2005) until this issue came to light.

Quick question for the assorted commenters here. – is there a name for the phenomenon where a phrase in the question means there is only one possible or likely answer?

There’s two levels to this. First is where there is literally one possible answer (i.e “black US President” only gives you one option) but there’s also questions where there’s only one that anyone’s heard of and that makes it very likely to be the answer (I have a vague memory that Czech composers is an example of this).

(Not that I’m trying to take shortcuts in quiz preparation, or anything…)
