Pop Quiz Hotshot

By | April 2, 2015

Geeky internet repository thing Channel Awesome have done a quiz it has been bought to my attention, and it’s a surprisingly dull way to spend a half hour, but it is mainly people behind podiums answering questions so doubtless the Digital Spy forums would declare it the next big thing. It’s kind of a dystopian comedy anti-gameshow where the losers get shot, and whoever’s reactions are slowest has to answer questions dressed up as Optimus Prime. Also features challenges that don’t seem to have any bearing on what follows or anything. It feels like it goes on forever, although it does get through a fair amount of 80s and 90s pop culture questions within that half hour.

It also throws into sharp relief what 31 Questions did on a tiny budget.

Fun fact, the budget bringing this and 5 other episodes to air was somewhere north of $45,000.

That’s pretty amazing, 31 Questions got 10 episodes out of $1k IIRC and shows way more inventiveness and has a much better flow.

Admittedly they could use local student-media studios which would mitigate some of the cost, but still.

I’m told by the person who pointed this out to me that the funding was raised to make three separate shows of which this was the first, intended to act as a pilot for TV. Many, many runthroughs were apparently Series 0 of Perfection bad, including the wrong people having party to the answers.

Sound the exit game alarm! “Panic rooms ((sic)) take on a whole new meaning in Science Channel’s RACE TO ESCAPE, premiering in July 2015. Two teams of three strangers compete in the ultimate test of grace under pressure. Trapped in a locked barber shop, a bar, or a 19th century drawing room, the teams race the clock to solve clues hidden in their room to open the door to freedom and wealth. As the time ticks down, so does the money they stand to win. The first team to escape takes the prize and ultimate bragging rights.” Please be good. Please, please, please be good.

I love this sort of thing and think it’s a shame with ITV’s strong regular daytime line-up they don’t try something similar next year.

I used to quite like Que Apostamos on a Friday in the 90s, they had a bit where the celebs would phone people at home and I couldn’t work out what the game was.

      Thanks!
