Quiz Buzz

By | April 1, 2016

We’ve been following Tom Scott and David Bodycombe’s Game On over the last few weeks, this week’s game, Quiz Buzz, was probably the most entertaining of the lot.

It’s the kids/drinking game Fizz Buzz, where you take it in turns to count up but say “Fizz” instead of any multiple of three and “Buzz” instead any multiple of five (or indeed any variants of) but instead coming up with something from a list. It’s lucky I wasn’t playing because I suspect the bleep machine would go into overdrive. Also amused in the comments that Fizz Buzz isn’t A Thing in the US.

Next week’s final is Order and Chaos. If you want a sneak peek, here it is played by someone at Grandmaster level.

I love the Game On games so far, but this ones been my favourite. I will definitely play it with friends, although we’d probably call it Quiz Kong since Fizz Buzz is called King Kong in Germany or at least northern Germany 😉

“Fizz Buzz” does not sound all that new to me.

In 1936, violinist Stuff Smith was the talk of the 52nd. Street jazz clubs in New York, especially at the Onyx Club. His big number was called “I’se A-Muggin'”, and a big part of it was the “I’se A-Muggin’ Musical Numbers Game”, which played pretty much like “fizz buzz”, with the key numbers being seven, any multiple of seven, or any number that had seven in it (to which one was supposed to go ‘Uh! Uh!”) of any number ending in zero (“Woof! Woof!”)
A record made of this routine is probably available on YouTube.

I can remember that, more than forty years ago, a high-school Spanish class I was attending had a similar game, using the word “caracoles” for both the “seven” and the “zero” numbers.

Of course, there is no telling how old this might have been when Stuff Smith worked it into his swing number.

I don’t think anyone was claiming that Fizz Buzz is anything new? Anyway, here’s the song you refer to, for interest:
