Big Broth-urgh

By | June 8, 2016

It was Big Brother launch night last night where a selection of basically identical people who were sexually confident and up for a fight entered the new look slightly migrane inducing house for a shot at £100,000. Joining them in a second adjacent house are The Others, six people secretly aiming to take down the housemates and take their spot in the house, some of whom have previous with said housemates. Most of the housemates would have slotted into a Celebrity Big Brother pretty easily (Nathalie Rowe! That girl from The Valleys! Sacked BBC  journalist!) In theory the housemates don’t know about The Others, in reality it sounds like they’ve worked it out pretty quickly.

I hadn’t felt so bored watching a launch night in years. And this comes off the back of last year’s launch which was genuinely excellent. The cast seems terrible, I can’t see where the laughs are going to come from. There will almost certainly be fights, but between people I’m not sure I give a toss about. Right now The Others as a twist looking like a rather expensive damp squib that’ll probably be done in a week.

We’re in a slightly odd position where Celeb Big Brother offers some genuine diversity and unusual “how are they going to react?” situations and combinations whilst Wannabe Big Brother feels so drab by comparison when in theory you have a much wider pool of people to choose from. Even the line they’re trying to drop in every two minutes, “the game has changed,” feels like a complete exaggeration at this point. Who is going to provide “DAVID’S DEAD?” out of this lot?

Disappointing. And I had been looking forward to it as well.

What’s the best game on The Genius?

By | June 7, 2016

Whilst we wait to see if Posessed have/will be able to sell The Genius, the best reality game of the last five years, to a UK channel, somebody has set up a poll to determine what the best game from the last four series are.

You can vote here.

Apparently there is also a Reddit thread with regards to this but it looks like it’s now been deleted or something.

Here are our links to coverage of The Genius:

Whilst we’re here Big Brother launches tonight at 9pm on Channel 5, best of luck to all parties involved.

Asking the big questions

By | June 6, 2016

As the nation is gripped by the new ideologically pure Top Gear, it’s time to ask the important question.

Imagine the synergy of Chris Evans advertising the other show at the end of each episode. Perhaps have Dermot on as the Star in a Rallycross Car. The numbers would go through the roof!

A-ha-ha. Seriously though I wonder when they will go out? Perhaps they will save it as a ‘spoiler’ for The Voice on ITV next year, which is funny because cars have spoilers.

And whilst we’re on the subject of Saturday night next-big-things it was interesting to note that Can’t Touch This, sent to the half-five slot where flops go to die, outrated the young and hip Bang on the Money in primetime (1.4m vs 1.2m all-in). Can’t Touch This has proven surprisingly resilient in the slot where other shows like Don’t Scare the Hare and That Puppet Game Show have found themselves well under a million. Probably not worth recommissioning mind, but if the BBC found themselves really stuck…

Bang on the Money is flawed as a bit of Saturday evening entertainment but it probably doesn’t deserve to go that low.

Edit: As I’ve linked to everything else, here’s the show discussion post for The Getaway Car.

Stuff

By | June 5, 2016
  • It looks like Challenge have picked up the rights to Family Feud with Steve Harvey.
  • We’ve opened our Fort Boyard 2016 page, although the show still doesn’t go out for a couple of weeks.

BB House

By | June 2, 2016

Pictures released, it looks great as ever. The series begins on Tuesday at 9pm on Channel 5.

The big twist of course is that there are TWO houses, a main house and a house for “The Others”, housemates that are scheming to take the place of people in the main house (as only main housemates can win). The Others have existing connections with many of the main housemates, although apparently neither will be aware of each other’s existence initially, although I’m intrigued by how far they can take it – it’s not like the massive two-tier house extension will go unnoticed. Is there more in the way of strategy coming?

I’m also intrigued to see what if anything they’ll do with the extension when Celebrity Big Brother begins after this run. They’ve done initial house splits before but they only tend to last a few days.

The show is launching against an already running Love Island which has been holding up pretty well for ITV2 (this is the opposite of last year) and the Cameron vs Farage Referendum debate, so some interesting numbers to look out for on Wednesday.

Questionable

By | May 31, 2016

We’d have advertised this earlier if we remembered it was happening, FOTB Tom Scott is hosting a LIVE Youtube panel show tonight from 7pm UK time featuring comics answering questions sent in by viewers.

I won’t be around to catch the start of it so keep an eye out on Tom’s Twitter and Youtube page for the link.

Edit: Knocking it out of the park:
