An interesting development

By | May 28, 2017

I don’t know how long this has been going on for, but I’ve started noticing subtitled South Korean entertainment shows are joining Netflix. This is brilliant news if it goes further as we’ve long thought Korea to be a bit of a hotbed.

This evening I’ve been watching Hidden Singer, a fun idea where a popstar is joined behind doors by five impersonators and an audience of 100 have to try and eliminate the fakes by listening to them sing and through a process of elimination if one of the impersonators can fool the audience they win a prize.

Fun idea, research suggests it’s been around for a few years and sold to a few countries. Being Korean it extends the idea to about 30 minutes longer than it really needs, but still.

It’s a shame the captions are only subtitled when nobody’s speaking but even so we look forward to seeing what else Netflix buys up. It’ll be a lot easier to get people to watch The Genius if you can just say it’s on Netflix!

This seems like a decent opportunity to gauge people’s feelings on the likelihood of The Genius UK. Do we think it’s been too long now? Or is this par for the course when trying to market around a foreign format?

I struggle to see it happening on television, although I still hold a glimmer of hope it’d work on a streaming service.

We always knew it was going to be a hard sell, to be fair.

Didnt know they had Hidden Singer up on Netflix but over the last month there has been a increase in South Korean programs based on my recommendation list. Id love to see them put I can see your voice up as it is really popular internationally right now through youtube.

As for the subtitles and captions for the words on screen it has became a problem with DramaFever as well. When the DF team took over doing the subtitles for the program they often leave the on screen text un-translated. Which is a problem as the PDs on Running Man often speak off screen with the on screen text so it can be confusion trying to figure out what is happening sometimes.

How did it do? I think it’s the sort of thing that might play quite well over here, but only if they can get the running time to a broadcast hour. Which shouldn’t be that difficult.

Joko and Klaas had this as a format within Die Beste Show Der Welt which consists of eight mini-shows with a runtime of about 30 minutes (or 23 if you deduct the commercials) and it was a great length given they only played the very basic mechanism. It was very well received on the show (by the studio audience and on social media) so I wondered whether they’d turn it into a six episode summer show to be shown on their late night slot after the end their show, but nothing about turning it into an actual show was ever confirmed unfortunately. I think it’s the sort of thing that can actually work everywhere in the world without needing huge tweaks.

Which episode of Die Beste Show Der Welt was that on? The only music one I have seen so far is “The Noise of Germany” and that one is kind of like I Can See Your Voice, another wonderful Korean program.

The third series of Hunted began filming two weeks ago:

The Hunters seem to have refrained from tweeting the runners’ wanted posters but not refrained from having spoilers in the videos.

Six episodes were made, with an average viewership of 250,000 (almost 1% share).

Results were not very good, despite using all A-list singers.

Interesting. To me it’s got early Saturday evening written over it, but again you’d need to cut it to an hour max. Which I don’t see being too difficult.
