Jeopardy’s actually happening then

By | February 27, 2023

Via TV Zone:

Twenty episodes in the Autumn.

There are still three things, the three circles to square, over doing this in daytime:

  • You’ve got to get an hour out of it.
  • You’ve got to have the budget to make the prize worthwhile.
  • You’ve got to make “what is…” not sound extremely stupid.

I can’t back this, but I wish everyone involved best of luck.

What do we reckon? Jeopardy at 4pm, Deal or No Deal 5pm as half term replacements for Tipping Point and The Chase

Sounds like they will be adopting the format of the recent US Celebrity episodes, with a “Triple Jeopardy!” round to fill the one hour slot.

Still, I can’t help but fell like 3 rounds plus Final Jeopardy! just isn’t enough to fill one hour of U.K. programming. Even the Celebrity Jeopardy! episodes had a lot of filler in them (and this is taking into consideration the fact that America has more frequent ad-breaks for its tv programs too).

Not sure about Stephen Fry to be honest. I personally would’ve gone for Victoria Cohen Mitchell.

Just can’t see it working like Countdown wouldn’t work over there on ABC. It thrives on history rather than format and stands out in the US as it’s a rare intelligence based game show in a sea of shows largely based around luck. The market here is very different and it’s not going to do anything better than our shows in the genre do already.

Stephen Fry a good choice to host though.

P.S. Is this bad news for Riddiculous?

No I understand Riddiculous will be returning for a second go.

The idea of Stephen Fry being relegated to a 3pm slot is quite a funny one though.

    Look… I love Jeopardy!.

But it’s a rapid fire quiz – for me, THE rapid fire quiz format. It really benefits from being 30 minutes – by stretching it to an hour, you’re watering it down. Same situation as with the 15-1 reboot.

Stephen Fry is a hell of a get, brings the gravitas and is a draw… but as a daytime rapid fire quiz host? Not sure. And is he willing to do 200 episodes/yr if it’s a hit? Doubt it.

Can ITV sell it and attract an audience for it? It seems like a tricky sell – I guess they’ll promote it as “America’s iconic tough quiz” angle.
Is there a call for such a relatively high-brow quiz in daytime, even as UC/OC continue to do remarkably well?

At least on ITV it can get half-way respectable prize money (~£5k/episode, much like Tipping Point, seems viable).

Massive credit to ITV for trying, though. It’s certainly out of their usual oeuvre and brand perception. I’ll definitely be watching every episode – if this could somehow lead to someone showing the US daytime version in the U.K. then I would be a happy bunny.

One of those shows I’ve just never got the love for. Really don’t think there’s an audience for it here. There’s certainly not enough name recognition for the brand for it to be a success on that alone.

Surprised Whisper North are producing it. Giving such a big show to a company with no track record in the genre is brave. Especially after how Whisper handled the football last year.
