Contestant Call

By | October 3, 2012

Friend of the Bar Paul Brassey has the following opportunity for people:

GROUPS OF CONTESTANTS WANTED FOR QUIZ RUN-THROUGH

North One Television are looking for contestants to help us run through a brand new quiz format for a BBC commissioner on MONDAY 5TH NOVEMBER 2012.

We’re looking for teams of four people, consisting of one central contestant and three of their friends. While only the central contestant will answer any questions, their friends will have a crucial role to play, so it’s important that everyone is confident, outgoing and eager to be involved. It’s also vital that the friends are real friends – with a decent idea of the contestant’s character, strengths and weaknesses.

To take part you’ll need to be:

  • §         Aged 18 or over.
  • §         Available from 10:00 to 16:30 on Monday 5th November, and able to make your own way to BBC Television Centre inLondon on that date.
  • §         Lively and outgoing.

The central contestant will also need to be a half-decent quizzer, with a broad general knowledge.

Please note that this is a run-through only, it will not be filmed and no prize money is available. We can, though, reimburse travel expenses within the London area (and will consider reasonable travel expenses for contestants travelling from further afield). Lunch and snacks will also be provided. Contestants selected to take part will be guaranteed an audition for the show proper should it be commissioned.

If you’re interested please send the following information to paul.brassey@northonetv.com by Friday12th October.

  • §         Name of central contestant
  • §         Age of central contestant
  • §         Occupation of central contestant
  • §         Best contact number for central contestant
  • §         Names of central contestant’s three friends
  • §         Details of any previous TV appearances by any member of your group

Please also send a photograph of the central contestant and please confirm that all members of the group are available and willing to take part before getting in touch.

Do me proud, readers.

Also the The Cube video game is out on Friday for Wii, PS3 and 3DS featuring 33 challenges and an EXTREME ZONE. The Wii one is £17.99 on Amazon, the PS3 one is£29.99, the 3DS one is £19.99. There’s also an iOS version already out, and with the updates isn’t a bad alternative.

I pre-ordered the Wii version of The Cube video game off Play.com and some time back I got an email from them saying that the game will be released on November 9th instead. I notice Amazon is still saying October 5th, so I’m a bit confuzzled…

    …Damn.

I followed the link hoping for that Cube video game that iirc the creator of the original film said he would make an exception for the retirement of the franchise for if any developer was interested in doing it.

…I swear I saw a format a while ago called something like “The Power of Friendship” that seems to fit that description. Didn’t look very good, to be honest.

“We Believe In You,” actually, now that I think about it.

Isn’t The Power of Friendship something to do with My Little Pony?

Actually I have heard about We Believe in You. Don’t think this is it, although my have similar ideas.

No, The Power Of Friendship is… Yu-Gi-Oh, I think. At least, I seem to recall The Power Of Friendship being what The Heart Of The Cards operated on.

Yeah, it’s not that. This is one of mine.

I’ve heard the “predict whether your mate knows the answer to this question” format, in various guises, dozens of times down the years. Always thought it would be tedious for viewers, who don’t really know (and probably don’t care) whether Barry thinks his pal Steve knows the capital of Uzbekistan. It’s probably the second most common idea knocking around development offices, behind it’s evil twIn – the “determine which of these strangers know the answer to this question” format – which is deeply flawed, in my opinion.

I liked it in No Win No Fee when you got the choice of TWO easy questions to try and stump someone.

I say I like it, I’m of course being deeply sarcastic.

That has to be top of my wish list of shows that I hope people could find for TV Ark‘s game show opening credits gallery.

Inconsequential game, but the opening credits were memorable; it was a video of a party of fast friends dancing with each other – and one shot in the sequence had Les Dawson dancing in front of that video as if he were at the same party as them, but clearly he wasn’t. Even cutting away from that shot within about a second and a half was not enough to obfuscate how they had obviously done it.

It creates quite reasonable watches in the buzzer format – Second Guess, alternate questions of It’s Torture, et cetera, so it might work in other guises.

Yes, if it’s “on the buzzer”, and the show moves along fast enough, it doesn’t matter so much that (as a viewer) the decision-making process isn’t so interesting to me. I can play along with the questions, and just enjoy the moments of drama / comedy that are created.

It’s when you put all of the emphasis on the decision-making (as opposed to the Q&A) that I think things start to fall down. To me the decisions always seem either uninteresting (if the group know one another), automatic (the science teacher knows the science question) or arbitrary (oh, turns out those cunning producers cast a blonde Essex girl who’s *actually* a nuclear physicist, should have asked *her* the science question after all).

On an unrelated note, what’s the story with the contestants on Le Juste Prix? The contestants seem to already be mic-ed when their names are called. Do they already know they’re going to be contestants?

There’s something a little bit off with what I’ve seen of Le Juste Prix this year – some of the energy seems to have gone, and I noticed Lagaf’s announcer mate wasn’t there. Sad really.
