The Mole In Dutch In English

By | January 9, 2013

We’re reaching the last few days of our Poll of 2012 voting, don’t forget to get your votes in by Friday 11pm.

Anyway, thanks to Friend of the Bar ThatDarkSpark, an English translation of the latest Wie is De Mol? is now for viewing. You can join in with our Wie is De Mol? 2013 coverage here, where you can also play Daniel Peake’s The Suspect List.

Meanwhile, it looks like Seven in Australia have dropped the Culture Clash element of their new series pretty quickly:

Don’t know when that is starting yet.

That’s the 1001 Things renewal justified then.

And Tipping Point now fully confirmed as an undeserved hit. I wish I was wrong on that show, but now it’s really hurting DoND.

The Chase numbers are a tad inflated though, that’s a one-day bubble after Tuesday’s episode drew word of mouth. I still predict that Pointless will win that battle more often than not.

The Chase has won every day this week so far, although yesterday was indeed its biggest margin of victory of the week so far.

Tipping Point really is doing well in that 4pm slot too – ITV averaged 1.23m in the 4pm hour across 2012 so the numbers are well above the slot average.

For all its faults, and it has several, I find the amount of invective towards Tipping Point quite baffling. It has folky appeal. It’s probably the only quiz on telly at the moment where everyone seems to be having a great time regardless of outcome, and not in a forced American way a la The Fuse.

Quizzes with character are a welcome development.

I’d argue Pointless might possibly count by that definition too.

Tipping Point is certainly a commercial hit for a reason. I think a lot of the game show geeks on here are more perplexed by it because, given how many daytime game shows there are out there now, for that one to be a hit seems surprising.

Then again, it’s up against a fading DoND and the generic Perfection, so it’s not a surprise it’s going to look a lot more interesting to quite a few people. As you say, it has character. Perfection doesn’t; DoND does, but it rubs quite a few people off the wrong way.

Maybe I’m the same with Tipping Point. As a pure game, it’s fixable (possibly even as simply as topping up everyone’s prize fund to the leader’s tally after each round a lá Shafted – it’s not like they can’t afford it with 1.7m a show).

Yes, Pointless as well in fairness.

It’s totally a show I’d like to apply for. The last show I was properly tempted by was Spin Star, but then it got axed.

As somebody who plain doesn’t like Tipping Point, I can understand how it would attract people who normally wouldn’t tune in to an afternoon quiz show. They seem to have found that audience, fair play to them.

His showreel suggests he’s basically the Aussie equivilent of someone like Craig Stevens. I hope they know what they’re doing.
