Things that are on at the weekend

By | March 8, 2013

Well I say “weekend”, I mean “this evening”.

  • Takeshi’s Castle Rebooted: Dick and Dom commentate over new unseen Takeshi’s Castle footage also featuring newly filmed bits with General Tani/Lee, who doesn’t appear to have aged much in 25 years making him the Japanese Neil Buchanan. (Challenge, 10pm)
  • 5 Gegen Jauch Celebrity Special: Actually I was a bit disappointed Cash Crash isn’t on because I really quite enjoyed it last week. Anyway regular punter James keeps banging on about this so I will endeavour to watch it properly this evening. It starts 7:15 UK time, but you’ll need to use some dark magic as it’s on Germany’s RTL.
  • The Mole was revealed on Dutch TV last night. We’re waiting for the English subbed version likely out on Sunday. You can watch the entire series with English subtitles and discuss the show here.
  • It’s the last in the series of Bother’s Bar favourite Avanti un Altro on Italy’s Canale 5 on Sunday. It’s been running every day since September.
  • This Sunday at 8pm Mix It Up Real Good returns with a game of Stud Hi/Lo. It’s free and open to anyone. So come and join us!

Cash Crash was a one-off pilot. Don’t know if they’ll make more.

Sorry for banging on, but to me it’s a great show. Rates very well and is quite humorous.

To note; the Pointless jackpot was won today. £24,750 is a very nice amount of money. Well done to the winning pair.

Alright, this is simple enough to describe, it’s a team of five versus host of German Millionaire Gunther Jauch. Each question is worth an increasing amount of cash. The five get to confer whilst picking their answer, then Jauch picks his whilst the team try and psyche him out. He gets lifelines. Final question is ‘all or nothing’, but basically Final Jeopardy. They have to decide their bet before they see the question.

Ah OK, the team get lifelines as well, one of which involves taking a microphone and asking for audience advice.

And the phone lifeline is asking a member of the audience to phone one of their friends.

It looks like audience members who give good advice earn money.

€500 if they get it right. If many people give the same answer, the celebs/Jauch decide who the money goes to.

I haven’t quite worked out how the variety segments tie in, if they do at all. Is it to help demonstrate the correct answers?

It’s just a bit of fun really. In the last show there was sumo-wrestling and some bartenders for some cocktail-making related fun.

My live stream has decided to stop working. Bloody annoying.

I’m tying to work out who’d make a good UK Jauch equivilent.

I think for it to work in the UK it would need someone well read but also mildly irritating.

    5 Versus Richard Madeley.

When Nico. W and I were talking about it earlier in the year, we kinda agreed that Noel Edmonds would fit Jauch’s role perfectly.

Not sure about Madeley. I wouldn’t say Jauch is mildly irritating either. Very smart man, and funny with it too.

No I don’t think Jauch is irritating in the slightest, but I think in the UK where we don’t tend to have explicitly intelligent light entertainment stars, I think it’d be an easier sell to have someone the audience at home won’t mind rooting against and can give and take a bit of stick.

I would actually agree Edmonds would fit fairly well, but I also think he wouldn’t be that good answering the questions.

          Jim Davidson comeback gig?

A few years ago this sounds like it would have been a job for Beadle, but sadly that’s no longer an action. Perhaps one of the Chasers could break out…?

Yeah, Jeremy Beadle is the obvious choice, but obviously rather more difficult now.

5 Vs Labbett might be a goer, although he might be *too* good.

Mmm, yes that was entertaining, I don’t think the format is anything massively special but it’s sold on its hosts and production which are strong.

You’d have to really streamline it for the UK though, 12 questions over 150 minutes just isn’t going to be happening, fun variety bits or not.

I enjoyed tonight’s show. Great mix of everything, from the Bavarian dancing/arse-slapping to the play go-kart race. Hoping someone will bring it over here. If they do though, a small request; don’t change the format!

I’m afraid we will have to add an “agonising moral dilemma” at the end. Sorry.

The Avanti un Altro site has stopped working for me. Every video just sits at “Loading…” forever. Does anyone know of a workaround?

I found trying on another browser sorted it when it happened to me last, but it’s probably only a temporary problem.

    heard on AUA!

Bonolis: Italian or French, the prosecco wine is…?

    old lady assistant: good!

    Bonolis: …I’d VOTE for her!

the official site http://www.video.mediaset.it/programma/avanti_un_altro/archivio-video.shtml has now some extra videos with backstage “and other horrible stuff” as Paolo put it tonight.

mr. Jurgens wrote on Twitter not to miss the last two episodes, where they apparently pulled the stops out.

as if they had stops before ^_^

5 gegen Jauch scored 5.36m (17.8%). In the key demo, it got 2.07m (19.6%). Very respectable numbers all round. Thrashed Celebrity Boxing on Sat1.

Nothing on ‘Weet ik Veel’? The new RTL4/Talpa/Linda de Mol quiz premiered last night on the broadcaster, on the same slot as I Love My Country. Show got an amazing start with 2.3 million viewers, 32,6% market share. The interactive app crashed within the first 20 minutes of the show, as it was super popular.

I will do a write up later, but it consisted of 5 rounds, 10 question each. Every correct answer gets you 2 points. In the final, the best playing celebrity (there were 3 playing) and the best student (out of 100) play together a final. They have to answer as much answers as possible in 4 minutes. 20 possibilities on the screen, the correct answer is always between all the answers. They could make 6 mistakes in total. The celebrity plays for a charity or a person that can use the money really well, the student gets an additional 25% of the earned prize money.

Yes I can see the attraction of this, it’s basically Test the Nation with an end game isn’t it?

I’m amused they have to keep apologizing for the technical difficulties across the bottom of the screen every few minutes.

And the endgame is basically the Wonderwall from Winning Lines.

Surprised it’s been so long since something like this was done in the UK.

What do you mean? It has been a long time since it was in NL or since it was in the UK?

The endgame is quite decent, but I am not entirely sure whether the last 10 minutes are that good for watching the other 70.

And that message below in the bottom, it was a little bit too much.

In the UK. I know Test the Nation was a Dutch format, but the BBC used to make quite a big thing of it on Saturday nights every few months, spinning off from the original IQ tests into general knowledge quizzes, quiz of the year, that sort of thing. The interactivity – play along on the red button or online – was a big selling point.

It’s been a long time since we’ve had something like that.

Come And Have A Go (BBC) also springs in mind.

No one can beat De Canvascrack (quiz show on Canvas, a Flemish public channel) when it comes to perfect interactivity. Another simple format with a touch of 15-to-1.

          3. VierkanteO

Ah, I see. They are doing that now as well here – we had first the IQ test and then a couple of weeks later there was a travel test.

One point I forgot mentioning here, the final was separately credited to Endemol, although it was a Talpa production and idea. Full review and screnshots are up at my blog btw.
