Sky One AND SKY ONE HD
Well since the first series it won Best Entertainment Show at the Rose D’ors and has since sold to Denmark, Belgium, Argentina, Sweden, Russia and China (Gary Monaghan suggests those last two feature a bear and a panda). Bother’s Bar once again backing the unlikely winners.
And so we’re back at the danger-filled Wild Wood once again with Kate Humble and Jason Byrne as new teams, one who can see but aren’t protected to the dangers and one in a giant animal costume who is well padded but can’t see anything, vie to enter and escape with the treasure which if it’s the same as last year is £10,000 although we don’t know yet.
It’s blindfold It’s a Knockout meets the box task from Big Brother 6 but with more mystery and arguing and prog rock. And if it’s as good as last year it’ll be hugely entertaining.
If you want a sneak preview they’ve recorded two celebrity games to feature in an end of series compilation and one of them is up on Digital Spy right now.
Well, glad this is back, still the best end game currently on telly.
Of the new events I couldn’t work out any of the songs on Name That Tweet, the other games were enjoyable (the pub game is very It’s a Knockout like the pig swill game) but my favourite was probably the stinky fish tag game, I can’t believe people weren’t just swinging blindly considering.
The blackbird in the name that tweet game wasn’t originally called DJ Blackbird he was called another name after a certain famous DJ who was recently sacked by the BBC. We had to change it all a couple of weeks ago!!!
Now that home VR is (at least, just about) A Thing, would Wild Things make a very good or a very bad VR game? (Someone else suggested Knightmare VR edition already.)
Given that the whole point is that the Wild Thing can’t see anything, I’m not sure VR would add anything in this instance. You’d lose the slapstick!
Knightmare in theory could work as a role playing game whose central conceit was limited to the technology of the time.
Giving one player the controllers+radar and the goggles to another could work.
Possibly, but I’m not sure what anyone would get out of it.
You might have a decent game but it wouldn’t be Wild Things.
Edit: Qualifying that a bit, the WT endgame is probably a better game for the viewer because of our privilidged position in being able to see everything. Sure, you could emulate the game and it would be, you know, fine (although I’m not sure about the downtime), but like most games in Wild Things it’s been designed to be *watched*.
0.19m last night which I believe is well up on last year’s opener.
This endgame gives me serious panic sweats. It’s a fantastic idea though.
The Rotten Wood has a new aspect – any non-animal who loses a round now gets some gunge over their head (as well as maggots) while in the barrel.
I can’t work out if the endgame course is a bit longer this time round, it seems to be regularly taking three “goes” to get to the end this time.
The Old Boar is still a bit of a weak point, but at least the Rotten Wood was hysterical. And I approve of Scott Walker’s Jackie being used in the Pongy Pond.
It does seem a bit longer, but I think there’s more obstacles if nothing else.
That electric shock game should have been referred to as bee-gatelle. Shoot the writers.
I think there might be more than one endgame course this year – I don’t remember anyone ever struggling with a steep hill at the start before.
The end game course is a bit longer than last year. We changed it so that the couples didn’t try and work it out whilst they were filming the earlier games. It’s basically straight which makes it also easier for us to film and to hide cameras, so this season we have been able to use lots more of the POV cameras. Last year they were compromised a lot because they kept on catching our cameramen in them
Is an episode filmed over a few days? I note sometimes you see the sun quite low in the sky on the early games sometimes (like the Pongy Pond yesterday, for example), although you might show them out of order of course.
0.21m (1.1%) last night, which you’d have to assume is quite a bit above slot average if last year’s figures are anything to go by.
Each episode is normally filmed across 3 or 4 days. We basically build a set then film 2 or more casts playing that game. We then move on to the next set up. It works quite well because it enables the Casts to really bond, enjoy themselves and get better at talking to each other during the games
Ah, that’s quite interesting. I figured there mmust be quite a bit of downtime between games to launder everything.
I noticed when I looked at it on NowTV episodes were referred to by Cast A/Cast B etc which struck me as unusual.
You must do a ‘return to the wild woods’ and invite unsuccessful couples back. This time swap the partners around so the ‘wrangler’ can experience exactly what it’s like to be in the dark.
I’m whole-heartedly behind this idea Gary – just so you know 😉

Nice to see Team Owl this week be former Coach Trip contestants – James & Amy. They were red carded in Series 13 for keeping Brendan up during the night!
New game! The cow pat lie detector game!
And possibly the first time the winners accidentally ran back towards the chasing pack in the end game. Incredible.
I’m mildly impressed we’re still getting new games this far into the run, was amused by one of the truths being “I’m scared of looking at the sea at night.”
We’ve seen a few times that it’s a bit more difficult to catch the Fox because of its long tail which can easily get caught in the net. Is this unfair or just evolutionary advantage?
I’ve just noticed in the Pigsty in the 20 seconds or so before the Frenzy there are six boards in the background that slowly open to reveal the word FRENZY.
And they changed the scoring system for the cowpat lie detector game from partners finding the truth to Wild Thing convincingly lying. I will let others work out if that changes the result.
Well, the endgame was a complete mess this week! Another thoroughly enjoyable series.
