It’s MEGA MONDAY

By | August 22, 2016

So much going on today, I’m putting this here as a sort of waymarker in case you can’t be bothered to scroll down the page. Banish those Olympic blues, Show Discussion posts a go-go.

  • The new series of Think Tank begins at 3:25pm on BBC1.
  • Debatable with Patrick Kielty starts 6pm on BBC2.
  • That’s followed by Make Me An Egghead at 6:30pm.
  • Not forgetting that University Challenge is back to its normal 8pm start on BBC2 tonight, followed by Only Connect.
  • Today’s biggie we suspect, 500 Questions starts at 9pm on ITV (and continues at 8pm Tuesday-Thursday).
  • And if you missed it, another chance to watch the show that EVERYBODY talked about, albeit disparagingly, Spotless gets a repeat at 10:40pm on ITV.

Exciting stuff. You are advised to direct comments for the appropriate shows to the appropriate places, use this one as a general thread. Enjoy.

Edit: I’ve had it pointed out that as well as all this, Sarah Beeny’s Four Rooms (as it apparently now is) starts at 9pm on More 4.

Edit Edit:  Competitive reality show disguised as social comment Britain’s Hardest Workers where people compete in minimum wage jobs begins tonight at 7pm. This was floated about about 18 months ago and I had assumed it had been quietly dropped. Wrong!

This may have been pointed out before (I’ve only recently started visiting the Bar regularly again after only making occasional visits in the last three years), but YouTube has not one, but two episodes of Channel 5’s little-remembered and ultra-cheap afternoon word game Cryptogram:

Clearly, its 3p budget and the fact that it didn’t get its own separate billing didn’t stop it from attracting serial quizzers like David and Amy.

I don’t think Daphne Fowler was attracted, though. No mention of it on her website.

I am out this evening so will miss most of it, I should catch Think Tank and will watch Debatable and 500 Q on demand. Make Me an Egghead doesn’t interest me.

Lets hope 500 questions will do good for ITV. We need a new evening quiz. If it does become a hit lets hope ITV do a Million Pound style series. On for 4 – 5 days a series, two – three series a year.

Can anyone help me remembering the game? I think it was (Northern) Ireland (or was the presenter), and it had an ingenious endgame, where the pair was separated by brick wall, and they had to answer 6 questions in 60 seconds, or they walk away with nothing, but the twist was every second they DON’T buzz in, the price of question increases.

Neither Irish host, neither Irish game show, neither brick wall. Could I have been more wrong? Thanks very much.

So, Mega Monday comes to a close. What did we all think?

Think Tank – Business as usual
Debatable – Decent quiz, just not a lot of questions
Make Me An Egghead – Didn’t watch it, so no judgment on that
500 Questions – OK version, but would rather have the US’s ‘quiz marathon’ gameplay. This feels more like a quiz relay, if I can use an Olympic analogy 😉

Here’s an unusual WWTBAM ripoff from I believe Georgia: 13 question tree, 50/50,ATA, and Friend lifelines (though it’s more like a Plus One)- the unusual thing is there are no stated values for each question- instead, each answer is given a specific value sorta like Winner Take All:

Off topic, Mulhern’s Pick Me returns on September 3rd at 4:00pm according the Radio Times’ website. Which is a Saturday so I assume episodes will be weekly. It also means Mulhern will have two Saturday night shows.

That’s very exciting because I don’t think any more have been recorded. Unless they’ve done it in secret. Repeats presumably.

I think you’ve been duped by Wikipedia. The Radio Times entry includes the word ‘repeat’, while Wikipedia declares it to be a new series. I’ve removed it from that article.

MEGA MONDAY Scores On The Doors from Richard Osman:

    500 Questions 2.2m 11% (fell from 2.5 to 2.1). Debatable 0.64, Eggheads 0.94. Big Fat Quiz 1m.

None of those really surprising, 500Qs dropping through the hour from low start is not a good sign for the rest of the week.

Debatable looks a bit low but seems to have been fairly positively received so may grow in the future. Eggheads doing OK.
