Eye Eye

Well it would be remiss not to point out that Big Brother 2012 begins Tuesday night on Five (Auditions show 8pm, Launch show 9pm, Bit On The Side 10:45pm). The excitement level is basically non-existant as 10+ non-entities go into a house, and in a few months time one non-entity comes out with a large cheque. And then some more non-entities do it again for a shorter time, only this time they are celebrities!

And yet with little expectations I’ve got a gut feeling this might be quite a fun series. Nothing to back it up, and I probably won’t even watch it much past launch night, just a hunch that some interesting things might happen. Given that they’ve basically thrown some of the key concepts out of the window in the last few years, anything could happen.

One of the housemates will be decided by the viewers, Holy Moly’s Jamie East has selected three “wildcards” everyone will get to vote on tomorrow night. Exciting.

If its anything like last year, I’ll probably end up watching Bit On The Side more than the main show itself. To say it’s a bit crap is putting it mildly, but it’s got good hosts in Emma, Alice and Jamie, punk spirit and makes me laugh sometimes, and it’s usually on at the sort of time when there’s not much else on. And we like it when Pete Burns starts shouting at people and Jamie does his phone in.

Actually not a bad time for entertaining reality games, Amazing Race Australia has returned triumphantly and we’re also very much enjoying English translations of Dutch Mole.

for the joy of Travis, here’s the Affari Tuoi 80s special!

unfortunately it’s incomplete. after part 7, the uploader got an error and he gave up.

Broadly, I agree with Brig. Excitement levels for the new series are literally through the floor, reaching levels not seen since the last episode of “Totally Saturday”, or whenever it was that Channel 5 last showed Robson Greene sitting on a river bank. Nevertheless, I shall watch a sample highlights show, probably Sunday’s, just in case they’ve cast someone mildly interesting, or someone with a functional brain has slipped through the moronity filters.

Bit on the Side has punk spirit, yes. The bit of punk spirit where it makes sense to the people making it, but not to anyone merely watching. From here, the programme comes across as part of The Party’s one true narrative, not accepting any point that might slightly diverge from the one they want to peddle.

Amusingly, 1p Nick from DoND has hinted on Twitter that he is going to be in the Big Brother house.

Launch night twist predictably a bit rubbish – give someone 15 people to learn in an hour then pushing them to give reasons for nominating three of them, rather predictably didn’t work very well under the time pressure. Not quite sure what effect they were hoping for.
