Excitement Friday

By | February 3, 2011

It seems reasonable to mention that 3rd best show of 2009 Accumulate! with Dan “Dan” Peake starts the difficult third album (series) tomorrow on RU:ON, although the question is less “Are you on” and more “is this thing for real?” Let us hope for some quality punnage.

It is also The Million Pound Drop, there’s already a post for series four discussion so I would like to direct you there now.

Speaking of theme tunes, which pieces of music do you reckon should’ve been a game show theme but wasn’t (i.e. was used for something else).

This sorta feels like it should go on some show “set in the future” (Topranko, etc.). It fails in the sense that it wasn’t used for something else, although I randomly heard it used as transition music on one news program I listen to.

Unrelated, I always wanted this piece (starting at :18) to be used in some NES-era video game. (I like the Sax Chorus version better, search for it on iTunes.) (But bonus: Thomas Gottschalk!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7DaU8HinEE&feature=related

On a similar note, it’s not quite what you’re asking, but I was always struck that Shakira’s “Whenever, Wherever” could *so* easily have been a Eurovision entrant.

I reckon a fair few of the 8 bit Sonic stuff could would have worked well for an action/adventure show.

And I believe Only Connect has been recommissioned. Congratulations, David.

…Though – A series of 26 episodes plus four specials? What, exactly, is the tournament structure you’re going to be using for that?

In the first show, there are 27 teams. Then one gets voted off each week.

These four people have probably met before but by working as a team they have the chance to solve hard puzzles for no cash reward. There’s just one thing standing in their way: round by round we lose the team who’s worst at solving said difficult puzzles. *BA DUM BA DUM!* I’m your host, Ulrika Jonsson.

…That sounded a lot more humorous in my head.

Thanks for the kind words Brig! I’ll post a link up tomorrow when the show goes live. I apologise if Show 1 is a little off par, but it certainly picks up.

Doing some random searching, it appears Wetten, Dass..? is back on February 12. And Take That will be there.

Didn’t think Wetten Dass would have returned this soon. I’d have thought ZDF would have smuggled it back on the air sometime in the middle of summer.

I wonder how sanitized the challenges will become now?
Beer mat flipping and standing on one leg whilst playing the German national anthem on a kazoo whilst blindfolded may well become the order of the day.

It was slow but steady in Stockton-on-Tees. I concluded that we were all trying to watch it at the same time.

Good work, Dan and crew; it absolutely does not hang around or outstay its welcome, and for that alone it’s better than most.

But the scoreboard says 6…. And then it says 16, but you say 5 and 15. Am I blind?

Indeed. Ahem. We do apologise for the vast number of mistakes that infiltrated this episode. If we were a big budget (well, budget!) show, they’d be inexcusable. Somehow with the quaint student charm you let us get away with it – thankyou for the leniency. It won’t happen again!

Glad you like it, there are some incredibly tacky prizes coming up.

For those interested, this Accumulate! series came in under budget and cost just £12.25!

With all this talk with how long Pointless can last with their questions without repeating them. Endemol (via twitter) have confirmed they have signed a deal with BBC2 to produce 120 episodes (2 X 60 episodes). Not sure if the 120 episodes includes the ones they’re producing now.

Biggest win on the show so far. Biggest win on a UK game since August 2010 (Magic Numbers).

Your production team should give them a carrier bag like Play Your Cards Right did with their final series.

Oh and the online game crashed at my end.

Revenge for crashing my online game. Bwhahahhaha. You can also blame Chris Moyles.

Million Pound Drop needed that win last night – just a shame technical gremlins came in at the end of the show to put a dampener on it.

I’m imagining though questions will be notably tougher tonight to avoid giving out any more money!

A major daytime gameshow is getting some primetime episodes later this year. Can’t say which one right now but make your guesses…

Mmm, I suspect the time for Deal or No Deal to have primetime episodes has passed, unless they’re offering a million pounds or something. Can’t see it being Pointless.

The Chase would be the most obvious candidate with its current ratings, I expect. Although seeing as it’s Joe it’s probably going to be Divided or something.

If this means more Nick Knowles instead of University Challenge, I’m dusting off my Uzi.

Joe, I presume your talking about a major UK gameshow on TV at the moment

          2. David B

In seriousness, I’m guessing this 2×60 commission means 50 daytime eps and 10 more Pointless Celebrities or somesuch.

          3. Travis P

You could be right. Have the civillian episodes at the normal 4.30pm slot and have the celebrity episodes air on BBC1 Saturday evenings around 6pm, like Weakest Link used to.

Pointless, as much as I love it, I can’t see it working in a Saturday evening capacity at all.

    2. Brig Bother Post author

Right, actually I’m putting two and two together and coming up with Millionaire Hotseat – it’s daytime (well, early evening) in Australia, would go nicely with ITV intending to refresh the brand.

      Hot? Cold? COME ON JOE.

For some reason, I’m gravitating to ITV’s lifestyle games, and “May the Best House Win” in particular. It’s a bit like “Come Dine with Me”, only with people’s houses rather than their cooking.

The logic here is that ITV doesn’t tend to get more than 4m for its non-soap primetime schedule, and there are slots (like 8pm Tuesday) where nothing ever works. Throw in a relatively cheap lifestyle show, and even 2m viewers means the channel is breaking even.

This is a decent shout also, and one I hadn’t considered. I’m wondering how ‘major’ they are though.

Thinking about it further, I can’t think of any quiz show that uses the ‘pun’ as a clue in the question device. It’s actually a pretty smart way of offering people a way of working out the answer if they don’t automatically know it.

US Jeopardy! does it to an extent. Probably 70% or 80% of the clues contain a pun or second definition as a hint.

The Observer has quite a nice feature about Watson vs. 2 humans at Jeopardy! today. It occurs to me that the show probably could dial Watson’s chances up or down by dialing the questions towards either the straightforward or towards Potent Potables and J!’s other wordplayier categories.

Anyway, forget Watson vs. Jeopardy! – I want to see Jeeves vs. Accumulate!.

I suppose there was Cross-Wits, a couple of decades ago…

Probably about time for another cryptic crossword quiz show to fill in those awkward BBC 4 gaps between series of Only Connect, you think?

Tying up with a previous correspondence, I was surprised at just how few of the RBQ questions themselves contain puns. All the levity and wordplay must come from the chairman and panellists.

As Chris Maslanka said on “Puzzle Panel”, all puns are bad.
